Aside from the known coolant line issue, this is amazing! Can any other brand do 80,000+ miles and 250 track days with such minor issues or without needing serious upgrades to be able to track (reliably) in the first place?

Courtney Walsh of Autowerks in Woodbridge, Ontario will be pinning all the fittings and he's trying to get them done before I leave for Mid-Ohio this Thursday. I'll get thicker, tig-welded tubes installed when I do a full engine rebuild.

has anyone filed a class action lawsuit against Porsche for the coolant line failures? - it seemed to get their attention with the IMS failures. is the NHTSA filings part of the class action process (i'm a designer, not a lawyer so excuse any dumb questions)?

A well-sorted Miata can be flogged at the track like our cars, too, as long as you resist the siren song of forced induction. If we were smart, we'd all be out there in Miatas. Just set the rear anti-sway to full stiff and it's almost like the engine is back there.

I can probably do the same amount of miles on my road bicycle, but will take 20 hours ... does it count ?

Anybody have any insight for the 10yr limit on recalls? It would really bite if only 04s and 05s got the 'fix' just due to the entire DECADE or more that Porsche waited.

The 10 year limit was a settlement agreed by Porsche and the lawyers for the M96 engine class action lawsuit. This is the US Government looking at a safety hazard.

I'm referring to the NHSTA's limit of 10 years on a safety recall repair for forcing manufacturers to fix for free.

Is that the case? BMW is currently recalling 2002 and 2003 3-series cars for airbag issues (other manufacturers also affected).

Cheers

from the NHSTA site:

Are there any limitations on my right to have a recalled vehicle remedied at no charge?

Yes. There is a limitation based on the age of the vehicle. In order to be eligible for a free remedy, the vehicle cannot be more than 10 years old on the date the defect or noncompliance is determined. Under the law, the age of the vehicle is calculated from the date of sale to the first purchaser. For example, if a defect is found in 2003 and a recall ordered, manufacturers are required to make the correction available at no charge only for vehicles purchased new in 1994 through 2003. However, consumers should realize that even though manufacturers are not obligated to remedy safety defects in older cars, a safety problem might still exist. If you receive notification of a defect on a vehicle older than 10 years, take the responsibility to have your car repaired at your own expense – and eliminate unnecessary safety risks.

Coolant leak after driving her. I was away from the car while it was cooling off but apparently she let go all at once while parked.
I do not know the leak area. It is not immediately obvious. I'm cleaning the car today and will look harder. I will go for the weld fix.
Yes, I was lucky where it happened. It really is rediculous to have this on a Porsche though and I will file the NHTSA complaint just as soon as I get a better idea what failed, the cost, dig out my VIN etc.
This could have been way worse but it is tough saying that when I'm looking at a major repair for a bad design.
So much for cabinets for my trailer. I get to buy welds and hoses now.

After reading some 15 pages of threads in two posts I'm a bit bleary eyed and need to head out and clean the car and look her over better.
I may have missed it but can some folks post the cost just for the motor drop, hose replacement and welding job?
Sounds like many have done a lot of other work while the engine is out.

Thought I understood ballpark $2k but can't really find a supporting quote.

Drag, relief and then maddening... Anyway at a Porsche dealer its about 14 hours of labor. Mine was done under CPO last summer by previous owner. I just ordered/received all the water hoses for mine from Porsche dealer and they cost about $160.00 Canadian.

I ordered the hoses since I noticed the Porsche dealer did not change all the hoses when they re-epoxied all the fittings. They only replaced the top hose that failed .
I will replace all the hoses soon since its apparently more common that one of the main top or bottom hoses split open before one of the epoxy fittings fail.
