Two things.

Is that metal polish used on a motor that's gonna get dirty anyway, or is it for something else?

Do you wear gloves when you work on cars, cause your hands look very nice. Lol

BTW, no gloves when working on the engine so you really need a clean pair of manicured hands

Default Piston rings

Here's what the rings look like when magnified 30 times. Brand new out of the box.

The top ring. Note the small chamfer at the outer edge. Also a ridge in the middle of the outer edge.

Same top ring top view.

2nd ring. No chamfer. 90 degree corners.

2nd ring ends butt together.

Oil ring. Note the round outer edge and a small chamfer.

What process was used to clean the cylinder heads? Ultrasonic I'm guessing?? Also, how do you plan to clean the block of the metal filings? Just a solvent bath or something fancier than that?

I believe Len used a hot tank and possibly soda blast. I'll see if he wants to chime in here.

For the engine case, I used simple green precision cleaner (designed for aluminum and aircrafts) and a garden hose to pressure wash all the openings and crevices plus I cleaned every hole with these brushes:

Also rotated the engine case in all directions to let gravity and water flush out all the loose bits.

Here's what Len said about the cleaning process:

"We ultrasonic clean and media blast after we close off galleys and water jackets. We use an aluminum specific media, mostly on the ex ports and outer surfaces that get exposed to the elements.

The ultrasonic cleaning is the ultimate clean. The heated solution opens the pores to let in the detergent and the high power sound waves, yielding a clean that goes beneath the surface. We do it several times throughout the rebuilding process, including as a pre-assembly wash. The state of clean is the best I've ever seen for pre-assembly, and it really allows the natural shine of the parts to come through, too. Love our big ultrasonic cleaner!"

Default Weight Balancing

Just weighed all the JE pistons, wrist pins, wrist pin clips and rings. All have pretty good tolerance.

Pistons: 400.6g ~ 401.8g (delta = 1.2g )
Pins: 89g ~ 89.3g (delta = 0.3g)
Rings: 28.8g ~ 29.1g (delta = 0.3g)
2 clips: 1.9g ~ 2.0g (delta = 0.1g)

If I mix the heavier pistons with the lighter pins, I should be able to only remove at most 0.7g to balance them between pistons.

Each new pin weighs ~10g less than the stock pin.

JE pistons

Wrist pins

Rings

Stock piston + rod

Stock piston + one wrist pin clip

Stock wrist pin

I weighted the stock pistons and rods and they have pretty good tolerance too. The stock pistons (with rings) differ by at most 1.2g and the rods differ by at most 0.5g. The ARP bolts differ by 0.2g so I can compensate the 0.5g some.

I also measured the little end and big end of the rods but I can only get their sum to within 1.5g of the acutal weight of the rod. Not sure how accurate and useful the measurements are.

Damn Ahsai, are you building a race motor?

Nice job on the blueprinting skills.

Great attention to detail. Ahsai will be rewarded for these efforts.
Assai, send me a link for that fish scale, and the jig for doing the small end balancing. People are always asking me for those two items, and I really like that fish scale.

I'd like to include these in my new Knowledge Gruppe technical directives for these practices.

Thanks Jake! Here are the links:

Amazon.com: Weston 20 Pound Spring and Hook Scale: Kitchen & Dining Amazon.com: Weston 20 Pound Spring and Hook Scale: Kitchen & Dining

The cool thing about the scale is it has a sliding peg that registers the maximum pulling force while you pull. I originally planned to send these out for balancing but later realized that I'll have to verify the work afterwards anyway...may as well diy I also checked with Charles and now know exactly where to trim mass off the JE pistons.

very cool. thanks for sharing. while I had all my stuff balanced at the machine shop, it's still nice to see this stuff.
