Selling a broken down car is an SOP in the used car market. There is no honor or integrity in this business. I worked at largest Toyota dealer in the Bay Area during my freshman year of college; every day it was either US fooking them or them fooking us on the car.

Substitute the car for an investment product

If your adviser comes to you and says: Well Django, there is an issue with one of your major equity positions in P996. We know that P996 will go into BK in a month and you will lose your money, plus due to the special clause in the BK proceedings you will be on the hook for the full value of your investment in addition to everything you lost, on top of that I can assure you that your position will never appreciate. Your other option is to sell the P996 stock now and take 10% loss and move the money into CVETTE stock.

Come on. Remove the emotions from the equation when dealing with cars.

^ I believe your example would construe insider trading, and everyone knows that when you are guilty of insider trading, you lose your seat on the exchange and all of your assets because the guy you bought the crop report from winds up in a cage with a gorilla headed for Africa.

I don't equate a personal asset such as a sports car with a financial asset at all. Investments are all about the trade off between risk and reward. Automobiles are basically an appliance with an assumed function and varying reliability. But being an asset that is personally used every day, it is assumed that you are aware of the reliability or fitness of your car for duty and passing bad goods on to the market, without disclosure, is dishonest.
I would not argue with you that people routinely sell their known problem car to either a private buyer or to a dealer, but the prevalence of this action it does not make it right.

'my two cents......

I am questioning which reality you live in. Get a job in my industry and you will very quickly understand that this is a reailty. The mindless pu$$ies working at SEC are clueless and useless. You can walk up to their office with huge banner saying I RUN A P&D, they will not turn an eye.

There is no doubt that many people would simply trade the car in, cover up or fail to disclose the issue. You seem to believe that most people would if they found themselves in that situation.

As we speak, my 2005 Jag S-type is being used by one of my sons. The car is in good shape but has a well known issue with the throttle body sensor that sends the car into limp mode (instantly drops the car to 25mph) without warning. Very dangerous especially when on the freeway. The cost to repair. $3500. The value of the car. Barely $5,000 if that. It happens every 2-3 weeks, we disconnect the battery for 10 minutes. Check engine light goes away and its good until the next incident.

Could I trade it in? Sure. Sell to an unsuspecting private party? Sure. Would I?

No.

The car is going to the Jag Indy Thursday for a rebuilt TBS for ONLY $1,000.

Then I am going to get rid of it.

That may be so. But the buyer will be made aware of the issue and have the receipt for the work and the warranty that comes with it.

At least "some" can't say I screwed someone by not doing anything and willfully failed to disclose the issue.

Big difference don't you think?

I suspect that most people wouldn't break into someone's house and steal $15,000 worth of stuff, but somehow the idea of offloading a ticking time bomb that has the potential to cost the next owner $10-15k is just fine.

In "my reality," the two scenarios are equally shady.

Watch "Suckers" movie. It gives a fairly accurate portrayal of car trade. Business is Business 5CHN3LL; and selling is selling.

You have valid points, but morality and "fairness" have very little room in car game. I will leave it at that.

I buy a lot of cars broken and hold them for people who want a Raby powered Porsche. I had the opportunity to do it so much that I started another business as a Georgia registered Used Car Dealer.

We buy the cars broken at fair prices, and sell them fully repaired with full documentation of what was done, or we hold them to be used as a foundation for one of our engines. Its a good deal for everyone when we do this.

Too many people don't do the right thing though, and thats why so many first time Porsche owners get stuck with someone else's problems, unknowingly.

Just when I start warming up to the 996s, I run into a thread like this one. Guess I should keep an eye on my wife's Boxster.

That said, if I ever do get a 996, it will be with the IMS upgrade already done before any metal debris was found. That's how we bought the Boxster. If the engine ever goes, I'm calling these guys:
