I traded my C4S in for a Turbo last month. I get bored at night so I get on Autotrader to "window shop." Apparently, this Turbo had been listed for a while (at least 2 weeks), but it never showed up on my radar because it had 31k and I always search for 30k miles or less. It was for sale by a bank that sold their lease returns.

Anyway, the price was unusually low, almost too good to be true. The pictures looked nice and the bank wasn't far from work so I went to check it out one day during lunch (I figured I needed to lose weight anyway and could afford to skip a lunch or two). It passed my visual test so I had a local dealer do a PPI (using the CPO checklist). The bad news was that it needed $3-4k worth of dealer-performed work to pass CPO; the good news was that some items were cosmetic & optional and the rest I could do myself. However, I used it as a bargaining chip to get the bank to lower the already too-good-to-be-true price by $3k.

My fiancee did not want me to trade-in the C4S because it was the vehicle I used to propose to her. My project car buddy did not want me to trade-in the C4S because my C4S was literally Phil's twin, albeit w/ 18k miles -- Atlas Grey, CPO, clear bra, exhaust, built-in Escort SR7 radar -- just perfect!

Since it passed PPI, I ended up buying it (obviously) and I even bought an extended warranty from the dealer that performed the PPI for peace of mind. However, since there was a lack of service history, there was an ever-so-small hint of doubt in the back of my mind.

Very shortly after I bought it (like the same day!), I happen to stumble across an old thread on 6speed inquiring about 911 Turbos and it so happened that the OP looked at the same Turbo a couple of weeks prior to me. A PM later, we were comparing notes over email. He had a PPI performed by an indy shop and, for the most part, that shop found the same things my dealer found, which is definitely promising and put my mind at ease -- trust, but verify.

The dealer had mentioned to me that they suspected the car had an ECU tune because of SOTP feel. The gentleman on 6speed informed me that it had a GIAC flash as evident by the GIAC flashloader in the glove box. Unfortunately, the bank threw it out or a tire kicker jacked it because it was not there when I bought it (lucky for me, I found a used one for $50 on 6speed so all is good now!).

Fast forward a couple of weeks and I found a receipt for Discount Tire Co in the glove box while giving the Turbo a full detail. It had the name and number of the previous owner so I googled his name on a whim and found his email address. I took a blind shot in the dark and sent him an email and, to my surprise, he replied back where he informed me that it had an EVOMS SSK and EVOMS diverter valves.

Long story short, I drove down to Houston this past Friday to pick up the dealer service records he had, which REALLY puts my mind at ease now, as well as buy the Milltek exhaust and EVOMS headers he had "collecting dust" in his garage (that he removed from the Turbo before unloading it)!

My Turbo may not be as perfect as my old C4S (seems like the previous owner drove it daily) and it may have 2x the mileage, but I am ecstatic that I now know and have the full history on it.

(As far as the unusually low price of the Turbo being too good to be true, well... the bank listed my PERFECT CPO C4S at lower than I would have listed it and it sold in less than a week!)

Thanks! It was not an easy decision to make as both my fiancee and project car bud had valid points.

Ultimately, since the Turbo isn't as perfect as the C4S, I find myself driving and enjoying the Turbo more! This always happens to me... the cars I buy and drive more often are the less perfect cars. Back in the day, I had a 300ZX Twin Turbo that was as perfect as the C4S and it was a garage queen and when I got a 350z, I ended up driving/enjoying the 350z and selling the 300ZX.

Today I had to drive way the hell out on Long Island (Riverhead) so it's a nice day and I figure I will take the 996.

On the why out I'm on the evil Cross Bronx expressway in stop and go traffic and this moron behind me driving a Lexus RX keeps blasting forward every time traffic moves and coming right up on my rear end, I am getting concerned that she will rear end me. Well I pull forward when traffic starts to move and some wise *** in an old E320 decides to pull his car in behind mine. Yup, she blasted right into the mercedes...

Thats a shame....

Otherwise it was a nice trip and the ride home was light on traffic so it was fun.

Marc, that works even better than the Bumperettes for minimizing damage!

I guess I'm different from a lot of you folks. Whenever I see a couple of teenagers in a riced out old honda or something pull up next to me I think back to when I was a stupid teenager; I always wanted to see 911s ripping down the highway or flying away from stops, but never ever saw it because every 911 driver was just so damned responsible.

So I think of that whenever somebody's egging me on...and I oblige.

I have to say, especially growing up in a place like Maine, I always tried to get a good look at any European sports car. I never tried to egg them on (I think this is a product of too many Fast and Furious movies), but I did roll down the windows to hear the engine and go out of my way to follow them for a while. Now,I would certainly be polite to any young admirer and oblige with a nice launch, but would not entertain a stoplight race with a revving coffee can.

Yesterday at work I was stopped by one of the Sr. Managers in the hallway. He said to me that he was driving to work the other day at 65 mph (posted limit is 60) and passed a black Porsche.... looked over and saw it was me.

Then he (jokingly) threatened to "expose the truth" if I didn't pay him off.....

My reply was that ALL Porsche drivers are inconsiderate law breakers and the sole purpose for owning a Porsche was to race up and down public roads in an unsafe manner with reckless disregard for the idiots that are stuck in regular cars.....

Naturally we both laughed, but the truth is, had he passed me in my Suburban the conversation would have NEVER happened....

(BTW - I normally don't drive exactly 60 but on 6speed there is a big posting regarding police activity in that area and they are targeting cars with no front plates... so by laying low, I have been able to slide by them several times so far, knock on wood)

Are you planning a replacement?
