Tested out the "park far away in the lot" theory this morning at the store. Came back out and a monster GMC SUV tank was backed in right next to me! Plenty of other spaces...go figure!

love this one -
coming into work, going through a school zone @ about 15mph following a very shined up and "tricked out" DUB vw Jetta, slammed, tinted everything, loud exhaust, wheels with rubberbands missing the fenders by a 1/64 of an inch (and later when I passed him i see the pink headlights, LED's all over the place and big yellow fogs)
this kid on the sidelines spins around and grabs his mom to get her attention and then points straight at me car as I see him chattering and yanking on her arm while continuing to point with big bright eyes and a huge smile almost jumping up and down...it was very cute (err...um, is cute a good word for that?)
HAHA - Kid has some potential - I kinda wished I could have offered him a ride on some saturday morning to really set the hook - but I figure about 10-40 years from now, he'll get one

There are always plenty of idiots out there to do this... best just to chose an inconspicuous space that puts shields your passenger side door from another car - islands in the parking lot are your friend.

HA - one of those days - on my way home I pull onto the freeway with one car between me and another 3.2 Carrera (Cab) - as I worked my way over and up to him I see two heads pop up in the back seat trying to get a look at "the other guy driving a car like Dad"
they all waved and we shuffled a couple times for leader before they turned off - seems like a kid kinda day for me -

Got to love the kids - dropped my 13 year old at his friends house - when I arrive the entire family is waiting in the driveway - my kid tells me he texted them to let them know he was coming in a Porsche. One of the kids had my son beg me to take him for a ride - I had to say no, it was dark and I was totally unfamiliar with the roads. I promise the kid "next time". Following day my son needs a ride again, waiting in the driveway is the other kid - he didn't say a word but I knew why he was waiting. So I put my window down and said "get in". Kids face lit up like it was Christmas - took him for a spirited but safe ride, answered all of his questions etc. etc. When I got back to his house his Mother was in the driveway and at first I thought she was going to grill me about being safe with her son in the car. Instead she scrambles to my side of the car and says oh my God - Thank you, Thank you, he wouldn't shut up since you were here yesterday, just kept telling us over and over that you promised him a ride, thank you for keeping your promise.
Made me feel pretty good - a simple thing appeared to mean so much.

Took my bother-in-law and two small boys for a ride. After about 10 min, to my surprise, the 7 year old (Zak) says “ Is this a manual”. He said he plays a Mario game and you can pick manual or automatic. LOL!!!

Decided not to sell my 996 the other day.
The roads around Seattle have become so rough and so pebbled, that the tires just roar....so loudly, I can't listen to music at reasonable volumes.
After researching, decided that a 3.0 supercharged A6 might be the ticket. Drove over some choppy, pebbled roadway in the 996 to get a baseline for the day. Went to a local dealer & test drove an A6 over the same roads.
Nice car; responsive in ways my '99 A6 wasn't. Lots of buttons, menus & submenus. (Lots of stuff to break if you want to keep the car a long time....)
It certainly rode smoother on rough/choppy roads than the 996...but the road noise was still intrusive (probably just speaks to how bad some of the roads are). Big disappointment was that after driving the 996 for years, the A6 just had little character to it. A good choice if you want a car like that--but not engaging. Just transportation.
Got out a set of musician's ear plugs I bought when my son got into music (to protect me from the volume at his performances). Can still talk to someone next to you, but it screens out the loud stuff. Conclusion: the ear plugs & the 996 were quieter than the A6.
With plugs in, if no one else is in the car, I guess I can always turn up the music. :-)
A cheaper solution than a new car.

The flip side to parking far away and then having someone park next to is that sometimes, it's the safest place for someone else to park and protect at least one side of their car. Granted, a lot of times it's a FU move, but I know if I'm in my DD and see an exposed side of a P Car, I'll park there to protect it and me.
