I may be slow, but since the spring looks like a strut, how does it make the clutch pedal feel easier, if it takes more effort to press the clutch pedal having to force the spring open??

When the pedal is in the most upwardly position, the spring is compressed. The natural position of the spring it to be uncompressed so it pushes the pedal downward on it's pivot.

The spring pushes in the same direction as your foot when you depress the clutch, assisting your foot. It's positioned in such a way that it doesn't provide assist until the clutch is maybe 20% depressed.

Oh...so the one in the photos above has the pin or something stuck in to keep the spring in the compressed position - confusing me!

Yup. But a stock turbo is a touring sedan and not a sports car, so sissy controls are ok.

The pin is NOT part of the assembly but was put in to remove the unit. Without the pin, the piston will want to retract into the casing, pushing the spring outward towards the front of the car..

In the photo it's the ziptie keeping it together. The spring is perhaps 4.5" long when extended.

Not quite that long, but yes, you get the idea. In the picture, if you remove the tie the spring will extend out the RIGHT side of the unit, pressing the pedal towards the floor.

Just did this and I would like to thank you all very much.

I have been driving a manual car for over 10 years and this is the only car that I stall every once in a while. Now it feels like a normal manual.

Default Problem...half off and can't get all the way off or back on

Big problem... I tried this tonight ('02 C2) and I pulled the pin almost all the way out and it hit the gold bracket so it won't come all the way out (pin #8 in gota911's post). Throughout the whole travel of the clutch I can't get a clear shot to remove the pin. So, I tried to put the pin back in and it is proving impossible to get the tip to line up with the other side of the bracket.

Do any of you have an idea? Right now I am screwed big time since the car is not drivable.

I know what you mean, but keep monkeying with it, mine stuck there for a minute but I think I did a combo of pressing the clutch all the way and pushing with the pliers at the same time, it eventually popped out.

Push the clutch all the way to the floor (use both hands to get it there, then one to hold it). You should then be able to swing the whole spring assembly down so it hangs vertical. You should also be able to move the top of the spring assembly (it is not fixed in place) to help. Good luck.

I assume that removing this spring won't cause faster wear to the pedal or any other clutch components..right? Was this spring put in after people complained about the 993's tough pedal?

It is just another "sissy" device and removing it will cause no harm to anything.

Ok, I see what you mean. My pin is out far enough now that it hits a nut attached to the gold bracket preventing me from pressing the clutch all the way down. Did you remove the pin with the clutch depressed all the way? I'm kinda stuck.
