Improved Clutch Action Dramatically

Get under the dash and remove the air duct for easier access. Secure the spring piston located on the end of the spring housing with a small nail or pin to keep the spring from coming out when you remove it. Remove the rod holding the spring assembly in place, press the pedal downward and remove.

I tried a friend's BM E46 330i and the clutch pedal felt like a toy.
I don't know people can drive those things aggressively with such light controls.

That spring part has been updated at least once and there's
at least one TSB on the issue.
Dealer lubed mine while the car was in for RMS and IMS repair. ;-)

Just remove the battery size assembly. Item 13 in the diagram on the previous page.

Whoa....what a difference guys...thank you!
Here are some pics that I took of the pieces removed
The pieces are much larger than I had expected.
1. I definitely had to remove the "vent" piece...made things a lot easier.
2. If you have race/aluminum pedals, wear a head band...I have a nice couple of small cuts on my forehead trying to wedge myself in there
3. I used a flat screwdriver and a pair of needlenose to get the job done
4. I am glad I am 5 7" at 170 lbs...larger guys...get your girlfriend to do it...LOL!!
Conclusion...spend 10 minutes doing it...definitely worth it. When I took her for a test drive, I had second thoughts after the first 2 clutch applications...but after driving it around the block, I wondered how did I ever live with the car the way the clutch operated before....
I would not call htis a spring...it is a freakin' coilover!!! I lost 1/2 a lb.!!

OK, I just did it. Definitely feels better, and it's definitely heavy. We'll see how it feels on track with the SSK.
Most recent manual BMWs (since the E39 and including the E46 330i) have a valve in the hydraulic system that limits the rate at which the clutch can close/engage. The purpose of this is to help the driver engage the clutch more progressively/smoothly. The effect of it is to make you look like you've been driving stick for about a week.
There's a company called Zeckhausen that sells modified versions of this valve that are opened up for $35. It's not really necessary though, and on my E53 X5 I just removed it altogether. Effort is still light, but the feel and control are much improved. Tell your friend(s).
