Yeah, I would have assumed no options is a rare combination, but someone said that’s not the case?

Also, I have to respectfully disagree on the interior being similar grade to an early 2000s American car, unless maybe if you are talking about an Eddie Bauer Ford or something. Furthermore, regardless of the look and feel of the interior, which personally I quite like, the interior in my 3/98 has proven to be incredibly high quality and long lasting. I have never seen a 140k miles 24 year old interior look so good. Not a Porsche, but another German car, the interior in my 2014 C300 was in far more worn and in worse shape by 7 years and 100k miles and I owned it for half of both of those and took very good care of it, and so did the PO.

Also, as far as 996 vs 997 you also have to think about the exterior aesthetics, which I and several others on this board prefer the 996. I also, can't imagine a 996 and 997.1 sound that different considering they both have M9X engines, however a 997.2 absolutely.

The only thing I wish the car had is better speakers. Maybe the sony option sounds good, but the stock speakers are terrible. The reason I bought the 996 over the 997 is the ability to upgrade the ims bearing. While 997.1 bearings are generally reliable, they are known to go bad.

I'd still take options like the limited-slip differential, sport seats, etc over a no-option car even if its a bit heavier. Of course you can get 408s to make up for that... and those save you on unsprung mass, arguably more important than the meaningless differences in weight between a "no options" car and any other early 1999 996.

Not sure how rare they are. Only anecdotal evidence that while I was searching for my car that I came across a few no-option cars. They’re out there if someone wanted to buy one.

My understanding with the 99’s….many were forecasted as leased vehicles and dealers opted for few options and many were silver. There are lots of silver 99’s with few options….including mine. Only option is sunroof. Finding one with factory LSD is rather special IMO. I wish mine had LSD…one wheel wonder is not the best in MN winters. Wishing mine was a C4 after 2.5 years and 30k daily driven miles.

LSD seems like one of those options every sports car, performance car, should have, but I can understand why a base model in any given lineup might not come standard with it. And many people choose the base model because they don’t really want the fastest 911.

My car has LSD, but I don’t think it helps all that much on the track or in the snow. Having both wheels spin in the snow causes the rear end to slide out, requiring countersteer. On the track, I don’t have any wheel spin out of corners, zero oversteer, but maybe under heavy threshold braking the LSD might keep the car more planted in a straight line. But then again, the ADB, which is requirement for 99’s that have TC and LSD, might be more of a factor, although I always turn that stuff off.

Default So informative!

I don’t think I have traction control. Here is the sticker as I saved it. I am the original owner. You’ll see a shot of the car the day we got it and sold the Mercedes. Your thoughts?

Normally the VIN is sequential indicating mine is the 114th 1999 model year 996 imported to the US, but I thought I read that Porsche VIN sequences may mean something else, like mine is the 114th manual cab imported to the US? Thanks.
suncoast parts can run your vin and get you a complete options list and codes etc.

I get it though, I was disappointed with the sound on the drive home. I swapped out the exhaust for an Afterhours Racing exhaust which ended up being WAY too loud so that was swapped for a 996.2 OEM PSE. Now it's just about perfect but could use 200 cell cats. It's really interesting how small changes in the mufflers can make such a big difference. My dad owns a 2000 C2 with Fister mufflers and none of my three exhaust setups have sounded close to his even though the original Gundo hack *looked* pretty similar to the Fister mod. Maybe it's because my car has headers? Who knows.

I still think a 997.2 with full leather is my sweet spot too but I can't justify spending that kinda cash on a car.

ADB does nothing when braking.

Good to know and kinda makes sense. I hope that ABD is completely disabled if the TC button is pressed (turned off) on the 99, leaving only the LSD for the cars that have it to work on traction.

@bdronsick - I have my eye on a 9/98 build. Would it be one of the first examples made solely on the 996 production line? Any concerns regarding a 9/98 build I should consider?

Related - This thread is super insightful, thanks for starting it. I sold my '03 C2 a few years ago and these comments are drawing me back to a 996.
