I’m not saying anyone is wrong, but it is odd that Porsche changed to cheaper interior materials in response to criticism of the early 996s. Doesn’t make sense to me, but obviously there is a consensus that the earlier cars have aged better

Actually it was an exhaust tweak that added 4HP

It's like a guy who is 5'6" saying to a guy who is 5'7", "Oh I prefer being 5'6" to 5'7" because it's much easier to fit through doorways"

Fun fact: the 992 GT3 is actually the exact same width as the 991 GT3, a whole 1 inch wider than the 997 GT3, which did most of the growing, a whole 1.5" (!!!) over the 996 GT3. Putting us back at, you guessed it, 2.5 inches in 20 years.

(Hint: talk about the length not width!)

Any more detail behind this? Curious, then, if a Fister/Gundo actually adds any HP, or if the exhaust improvements came from the headers or cats.

I'm sure an aftermarket exhaust would provide some HP gain, but like anything else, negligible at best. Fister mod I doubt any gains are realized. Same with intakes, headers, cats. Sure there might be some gain, but where would you actually see and feel it?

The '99 mufflers are noticeably quieter/more restrictive than the later models.

I would be comfortable saying the Fister/Gundo mod would free up a few pony's on the top end, but it would probably also loose a few fig newtons of torque on the bottom also.

fab speed exhaust, fab speed x pipe no cats with spacers (big weight reduction), Carrera 3.8 s airbox, huge difference. We just completed this and car with good 285/30 michellins n2 on the 408s rears it can’t hold first gear. Super responsive throttle awesome sound. Try g to see if I can get some soul headers next. Also running some water wetter on the coolant. Anyway love my early 99.

How do you get around the smog issue w/o having cat's?

I'll be around. I'm buying another 99' at some point. Just a different color combo I have my eyes set on. I've learned so much about these cars and love how they drive so much that its fun getting another one and doing it different this time but with the experience.

I thought I would be also with my current 99' but for the next months I'll be focusing on modding my Speed Yellow 996 turbo.

I'll still be around on the forums though.

My car is now listed in the marketplace. https://rennlist.com/forums/market/1284958

Fiddling with the exhaust makes real power if done completely - Fabspeed headers, exhaust, and catless x-pipe has made a big difference in my car. I have modified the exhaust on all 7 Porsches I have owned, and coupled with a modified throttle body on a few (Which I can't do on my '99 with cable) adds horsepower. The H.P. difference in c2 and c2s are mostly intake related. Engine is an air pump, bigger pipe in and bigger pipe out, blah blah blah

Cars over 20 years old are exempt from emissions in Massachusetts, and many other states.

Default X pipe has mini spacers.

The xpipe has these mini spacers installed and the served as mini cats. I’m in Texas so as long as there is no check engine lights it’ll pass inspection. If In your state they do the dyno type smog, here they used to do those with obd 1, clear all check engine lights and add two 16 ounces bottles of isopropyl alcohol (fuel dryer I used to buy the heat product), the car will have better emissions than when new. I used that trick many times with my 93 corrado and my 85M635CSI BMW. Here are some pics of the x pipe .

The spacers fool the computer as if there was a cat .

I'm just starting my build and I'm curious as to what you would do different. Good luck!
