I’m an industrial engineer with bachelors and masters by schooling.Not just Toyota the Japanese in general with Kaizen if I’m im spelling correctly, anyway this was a new concept for a bunch (JIT) Just in time manufacturing, and based on everything I have researched Porsche manufacturing was inefficient as heck, Toyota’s systems just brought order and efficiencies to the party. FYI MY MASTERS WAS IN human factors (ergonomics), quality control and advanced manufacturing techniques.
Other than my dissertation thesis project, I never practiced. I had an offer from Honda in marrysville Ohio to
go build more ergonomic cars, display panels etc, I went to work for Conoco, oil industry, and that’s the rest of the story.

Re Porsche's lessons from the Japanese: Someone characterized Porsche as a warehouse and trucking company, as they spent so much storing and moving parts. Making manufacturing more efficient at Porsche had lots of low hanging fruit.

 

Too bad, the entire industry needs your help desperately. Every new car is worse and worse, ergonomically. The Macan is the best daily driver I've ever owned, it's also the worst ergonomically, the older Q5 it replace was much better (ergonomically). Then there's BMW, which is even worse.

 

In my view, the 911-912 difference is about six vs four cylinders. So the current 912 equivalent would be the 718, which sounds about right.

 

Cars for sale are generally assumed to be in good shape unless otherwise noted.

Any additional spend, whether that is repairs or maintenance, are rarely reclaimed. Big or small. Replace a coolant hose, you cannot sell the car for more. Replace the entire interior, same thing. Engines are the same.

 

A knowledgeable 996/997 buyer would put extra value in a rebuilt engine from a well known and respected builder but the general 1st time 996/997 buyer doesn't. Since the majority of these cars' value is strictly "the engine" you would think it would be more important than paint color, wings, etc, which seem to be some of the reasons people pay up for these cars.

 

Furthermore, I don’t think 356 owners in the fifties knew that they couldn’t track their cars because they were wet sump…

I'm sure you know this, but unlike the 914, which was actually a pure VW engine with fuel injection, the 912's and 356's (I'm pretty sure -- correct me if wrong) were all Porsche and didn't share any parts with the VW engines. At that time, the 1600 VW motor had about 55hp, and the 912 was nearly double at 102hp.

I preferred the 1967 short wheelbase 5-speed "green gauges" 912 I test drove (declined due to rust + pricey) to the 69 long wheelbase 4-speed black-gauged 912 I ended up buying, but the '69 long wheelbase cars handled better.

You can verify through receipts, talking to the seller, and possibly talking to the engine builder. Nobody should just take someone's word about something as important as who/what/why of an engine rebuild, I'm not sure why you think it can't be verified.
