I wash the bellows occasionally, it doesn't look worn at all. What happens to them that requires replacement?

Like any rubber, they can deteriorate and harden then crack. I think a lot depends on climate. My car is a southern car, and it seems ok. I did make a habit of caring for it and other plastics of course. I use 'Nextzett Gummi Pflege Stift Rubber Care Stick'.

My first 996’s bellows was fine even after 20 years. When I bought this one the bellows had several cracks along the creases. So when open it looked like crap and I have to assume it allowed more dust and dirt into the engine bay.

I did mine a few months ago too. I looked for a pic, but unfortunately could not find one. Mine was quite bad and had ripped in the "valleys" so it looked terrible when the spoiler was up. It is very common that they need replacing. Like Damage said I am guessing it does vary based on locale and probably how often your spoiler comes up.

Swapped engine lids.

While I was in there, I replaced the engine compartment light bulb with an LED and put a dab of grease on the latch.

The new wing looks great. You just need to get the front bumper installed now!

I knew there had to be a light in the engine bay. I will have to investigate why mine doesn't work.

eBay 75 bucks. Free shipping. Hard to find the 1999 granite gray finish.

Thanks but I've had it for 5 years, I swap it out as the mood strikes me.

Your engine light probably just needs a bulb or maybe the plug came loose.
