Default Intermix Clean Up

I purchased a roller as a fun project for the winter and though it wasn't supposed to have intermix, it definitely does. I know I've read several ways for cleaning it out but I think they were buried pretty deep within threads. What's the best way you have found for cleaning out the cooling system?

Depends how heavy the intermix is. On my 996 I used a big bottle of shout and hot water after I had the repaired motor back in..ran it several short time periods and kept flushing the system until the suds were gone. Don't let the car sit for longer than 3 months or the water hoses will start to fall apart.

I do love the 996. I look at each one like a new box of Tinker toys. I have 4 sitting at my house right now and 3 are silver '99 996's. What will be funny is that in a redneck kind of way is that in a couple of days, only one of the 4 will have an engine in it. But Blue Chips will be headed back by end of year and I hope to sell one, possible two of the others this spring. And then I can buy some more!

Thanks Pete. That's a good idea. It's coming up on three months so I'm going to need to clean them out pretty quickly. But since I've got an engine I can stick in it that shouldn't be too difficult.

Raby (and Sneaky Pete) use Shout to de-gunk: "Until you can get a volume of hot water mixed with Shout through the system, you can't cut all the nasty stuff away."

Good info here: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...tra-nasty.html

More Raby editorial about Shout: "Simple Green sucks for this, as does most other products, even those that are designed for cleaning Intermix... Shout is the best thing you can buy, especially because it doesn't make a mis with suds, and etc."

Another good product to use is Lestoil. I used it on a Buick with gelled Dexcool and it worked pretty well.

Big chunks of non-ferrous metal and lots of ferrous shavings.

The last person to install that sump cover might have used just the slightest bit too much adhesive.

I had my radiators hot flushed, the drew rags through the aluminum tubes and then flushed the system out with water several times. I never used shout or any other product, but probably should have. There was still a little residue for a few years, it has been 9 years since my intermix, but none for many years now.

As to the houses deteriorating, I had extensive intermix, coolant like pudding, oil like a chocolate shake. Not sure how long it went before I discovered it. I tried changing the oil and coolant to see if it went away ( this was before many were fixing these problems) and it was obviously still intermixing. I parked it 9/2008 and did not take it apart until 4/2009. About 90% of the hoses are still in the car, never replaced. I have replaced one or two over the years since then.

Of course when my cracked head/intermix happened everyone said the engine was toast and had to be replaced (48,000 mile). This included the dealer, my indy and Jake. Nobody even talked about the houses back then. Fixed it myself and the car turned 93,000 miles today.

What can I say!

I'd assume an airlift vacuum filler (or similar) could be used to pull through and fill the system will clean water until its all gone?
