Default $1200 for a oil change ? (NJ)

Dealer 1 in NJ 1200
Dealer 2 in NJ 600.

Both dealers approximately 25 miles from on another.

What am I missing?

$595 bay area (porsche redwood city) for just an oil change. I remember seeing somewhere around $1200 for a 10k service (after the free one.)

A local dealer told me $3,600 for my 4 year service, but if I do the oil change myself, it’s $3,000.

Seems like all dealers are charging $600 for an oil change now.

I use this kit each year to do my oil change.

What you're most likely missing is driven from operating from a position of an expectation of competence.

$600 is annoying but accurate.

What you're missing between dealer 1 and dealer 2 quotes are $620 dollars.

Between you doing it yourself and dealer 2 around $400 and change.

You can change your own oil and filter, but how do you get the service into the car’s service records and how do you reset a 992.2’s oil service indicator? If I can do that, I’d be happy to change my oil and filter twice a year using my 4 post lift.

Don't know what tool other than PIWIS4 is available to do that and you'll need a PPN account as well. Not rocket science or expensive just a total PITA to do a simple SRI.

Once this idiocy cropped up, I did mention to folks who enjoy gear wrenching to just buy 992.1 rather than a 992.2 which now adds all levels of complexity to doing mundane things other manufacturers allow you to do via their PCM.

So the only other alternative is find someone in Canada that has the software to do this for a case of his/her favorite elixir or swallow the bitter pill alas.

On the plus side with PPN you can record the maintenance and it will become a part of the vehicle history in Porsche's system.

The history is in your vehicle every time you write/save steps.

OP - can you name the dealers? I purchased my car at Princeton and am heading there for my pre-paid one year service. I'd like to know if they're the $1200 shop before I decide whether to continue there for the long-term. I live across the river in PA near Porsche Warrington and could just as easily go there. But....they screwed me on some track prep things as a newbie a few years ago and I have a long memory.

For the routine maintenance on the 992.2, I would DIY, but like kayjh, I can't reset the service lights or do diagnostics.

Respectfully, 22992 above is incorrect. I infer from his user name that his car is a 2022 992.1. Those indeed work with PIWIS/Autel, but these devices are defunct for the .2. Since late 2024, PVD (Protection of Vehicle Diagnosis) precludes this.

In my case it’s a case of penny wise and dollar foolish. Most people buying a 3 or 4 year old 911 want to see the service records. Without them, you’ve saved some money doing the changes yourself, then give up more in added depreciation because the service isn’t documented. Now, if you like to change your oil 3 or 4 times a year, then do one each year at the dealer and the rest yourself, then the annual oil service would be documented. But I don’t change my Cayenne’s oil more frequently than the service indicator shows and wouldn’t treat the 911 any differently.

@f4bones is a legend and a great link you mention. A totally unnecessary impediment meant to simply funnel umpteen dollars to dealerships who time and again demonstrate their incompetence. I don't mean to repeat myself, but if you're in the market for a 992, do yourself a favor and find a pre-loved 992.1 and save the headaches and cash of whatever a 992.2 promises.

PS Though I must say that in defense of the 992.2, the garage door opener has been replaced from the PCM to below the rear view mirror. Like on my 2021 LC200

Weak-ish argument. Even Porsche accepts receipts for oil and parts for warranty claims. You needn't use the dealer or even an indy for this.
