I came up with really long-winded post initially, but my question really isn't that complicated.

I've always had an affinity for the 930, yet never owned one. Somehow I ended up with a 993 (which is NOT a bad thing).

I love seeing the 993 in the garage, but wonder if I'd like the 930 a little bit more.

The 993 needs some TLC (paint, gaskets for oil leak & seat re-dye). I have the money set aside to provide that TLC along with some wheels, suspension, RS bits and a few other odds & ends.

Should I keep the 993 and spend the dollars on it, or would I be better off selling it in the low 20's and taking my extra cash to find a nice, sorted out 930?

I've thought about this way too much, and either one would work for me knowing what I currently know . I've found a lot of wisdom, along with some other stuff , on the board since I joined and maybe there's something I'm missing in the equation.

Any input would be appreciated. I've cross-posted this on the 930 board as well.

Had both ... mine was an 87 930.

Daily driver? 993, especially in Texas. The AC in the 930 is pitiful. (Intercooler steals half the space from the tail condenser on the already-anemic pre-964 AC.) And the turbo motor does not love the heat, either, you'll want to beef up the oil cooler or at least have the fan running on it at high speed well before it gets up to 250, which is where it will turn on with the stock setup. 4-speed gearbox in any 930 until 1989 put the G-50 in it with a 5-speed. Not great for commuting as a result. Not a fun car in heavy traffic, either, with the AC, oil temperatures, heavier clutch and no power steering.

However, getting slammed back in your seat and rocketing forward when the boost finally comes on is pretty damn addictive.

Weekend fun car? 930 ... but see above.

I have also owned a few of each in the past.
I have one of each in the garage.
A 79 ROW 930 with many nice upgrades. A properly set up 930 is a blast to drive. It minimizes the dreaded turbo lag.
A 95 993 with a few upgrades.
Two completly differnt animals.
930 is very fast, raw and easy to get you in trouble if you are not carful.
The 993 is better composed, also great looking and a better daily driver.
With that said, if you find a 930 with no issues you should get it. Try it on for size, in a year or two you can always sell it and go back to a 993.
I have thought about selling my 930 (do not drive it much), but it seems everytime I take it out, that particular thought vanishes.
If you were a little closer, I would let you take my 930 out for a drive to help your decision making.

You'd think with as often as I change vehicles that this would have crossed my mind.

That's a beautiful 930 you have. I'm torn between silver and red if I go that route.

Airbag - Yes
A/C - Hmmm. You know how the folks from up North put their cars away in the winter? I'm thinking I could put mine away in the summer, especially if it's like the one we had this year.

Stock 930, or not? Even in their day I never was all that enthralled with them. Had many come through my shop in the mid-80s. 20+ years later? No way, not stock. Unless you just want a preserved one to own and show.

Now, if you're talking modified (which I'm sure is how all of you above owners have/had yours), different story. Up to your personal preference if you care to give up the amenities we now take for granted. I wouldn't as my only 911. For an occasional driver that had been regeared and/or modified to minimize turbo lag? Might be worth it to you, just to say you have.

I'm thinking mildly warmed over. I don't need a rocket ship, but don't mind a little bit of thrust. I pretty much fell for the looks of the fat rears on the 911s. That's one of the things that attracted me to the 993. I've thought about a 911 with the M491 option, but figured why not just get the turbo along with the rest of the package.

The 993 is now an occasional driver and a 930 would fill the same role.

The AC part I think is pretty easy. Call up Rennaire or one of those place that sells AC upgrades to the 930. New barrier hoses, condensers, evaporators, R134, and $$$ would get you nice and cool.

Have you thought about a 965. Best of both worlds, last of the old body style, A/C that works, 5-speed box, better handling. I had a mildly upgraded '91 and it is the one car I really would like to have back again. Before going to buy mine, a friend let me take out his '88 930, all stock, awful turbo lag, rough ride, but still fun when the turbo finally kicked in. Then I test drove mine and was blown away by the improvements.
