Thinking of switching to a 930 - Crazy?

Default Thinking of switching to a 930 - Crazy?

Okay, I have a pretty good daily driver of a 993 that weights 2900 lbs with a ducktail and a rebuilt engine with a V-ram conversion. It's a sweet driving car with the usual suspension bits, good AC, and looks pretty nice.

But now, I am thinking of going retro to an early lightly modded 930. Yep, with the marginal AC, non-power steering and brakes, white knuckled handling, rawer ride, and a much rawer and interior. It got no airbags nor ABS. But then there's those 930 curves and 350+ ponies.

This will be my, sunny, rain, snow, going to the grocery, fighting traffic driver in hotter-than-hell Texas.

Am I doing something stupid here? Anyone came from a 930 that can tell me that switching car will be a good experience?

A totally different driving experience.
You hit the hit points of the 903's negatives.
My own personal preference would be to upgrade to a 993tt if you want the extra power.

I like 930's too, but if you got a good solid 993 with a recent engine rebuild it doesn't make since to get rid of it. If your going to hold onto your 993 and are looking for a 930 to add to the garage then I would go for it.

As much as I love the 930 curves, I wouldn't want one as a daily driver.

Sounds cool Anthony. But you might miss the AC. Also consider that selling your car will be a challenge in this market - selling cars in general, not yours specifically.

As an additional, weekends only car, I'd say go for it (Ilove the 78-89 3.3 Turbos). For a true daily driver I'm less convinced.

I wouldn't ever go back to a torsion bar 911.

Why? I can understand the superior aspect of multilink coilover suspension at a track...but...

I had a couple of 83SC's that I had fond memories of. Recently had a chance to drive a pretty nice example...........I had forgotten how harsh the ride is, along with difficult and vague transmission, heavy steering (around town). Couldn't wait to get back in my 993.
Also had a little time in a '79 930......no fun below boost, big grin on boost. 4 speed doesn't keep it in the good revs. Harsh, touchy.
Go find a nice 930 and take it out for a bit........it will beat some sense into you!

I had a 930 and had to sell it when I moved to LA. The 930 is an intoxicating, raw monster and absolutely shines on deserted roads but it's awful as a DD, especially in densely populated areas with traffic. The steering, gearing and A/C are the biggest issues.

You have a stunning and well sorted 993 that it's perfectly suited for a city like Dallas so I can only fathom you might be suffering from the-grass-is-greener-on-the-other-side syndrome which I'm sure many of us can relate to. Don't make a decision you might regret.

PS - Just keep modding!

"It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow" Torsion bars are more fun in my opinion. On and off the track.

I enjoy driving my 930 more than my 993TT. You have to drive the car, the car doesn't drive you. I would think twice in DD'ing one though. SFBanchs did an A/C upgrade to his 930 that will freeze you out of the car, so the A/C issue can be fixed...
