Default Varioram in a 95?

I am building a nice 3.6 out of a 97, and was curious if you could put a 97 Varioram in a 95. I know the 95 is OBD-I. Can the 97 be hooked up to an OBD-1?

Seems you could block off the SAI ports.

Cheers,
Emerald

Thanks for the links. I probably used a poor choice of words on my initial search.
This should get me started.

Why do you want a Vario Ram, when the non VR is so much better? The VR is heavier, takes up more space, is more complicated with more moving parts, etc, etc, and as opposed to what most people believe, the VR does not give you more power or performance than the non VR. The only "advantage" the VR has, is that it give a better torque on low rpm, so if you put-put around town in 4th gear at 1500rpm, then the VR is for you. If you prefer more spirited driving, the non VR puts out just as much power as the VR, despite the 15HP difference on paper. If you want to chip the non VR engine, it's cheaper and easier than the VR. Take a look at Porsche tuner FVD's page for 993 engine tuning: http://shop.fvd.de/us/en/Porsche-0/9...uningKits.html. The non VR motor cranks out the same 300HP as the VR motor.
The English magazine Total 911 did earlier this year a comparison between the VR and non VR, and concluded that the non VR was more responsive and quicker to drive. The only "benefit" the VR motor had, was that it looked better... The German magazine Auto Motor & Sport did a VR vs non VR comparison in August 1995, and the 0-100km/h both cars did in 5.2 seconds, while the VR car had a 1.5mph higher top speed. The fact that Porsche abandoned the VR concept, and went back to the non VR intake on all later water cooled cars, speaks for itself. With all the potential problems with the OBDII 993's, the non VR motor is a no brainer!!!

Remapped 993 Non Varioram vs remapped 993 Varioram. No more to say really.

For those of us not remapping our ECU's, do you have a chart of a stock VR vs. NVR?

Always been curious, never been able to find one.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the input. I probably would not take a non VR and convert it, but I have a VR out of a 97 C2S, and will be rebuilding it over the winter. I plan on going with RS intake valves, RS cams and chipped. I do not have a car, and was curious if I could consider MY95 cars, or would I have to stick with 96-98 cars.
I thought jmarch's article was great, and so I figured I could get any 993 and put my new engine in it. I understand the VR non VR debate will always go on.

Cheers,
Emerald

It depends, I did what you are doing, I bought a RoW vram which is 55pin OBD1 compliant, A stock US '95 DME and wire harness is also 55pin OBD1 compliant. There are a couple of minor changes to the pin assignments that need to be made and you must use a RoW vram chip or a custom chip w/ RoW pin compliance(Steve Wong is a great source for these). Any way after I bought the engine I needed a US '95 chassis to install it into. Note that a RoW RS is also 55pin but has slightly different pin assignments from the other RoW 55pin cars, it would also need some pin reassignments but different ones from the other RoW engines and or a different chip

If you have a 55PIn engine it is much more involved to plug it into a '96 up 88pin US car, you would need to t/p the whole harness and DME.

similarly if you have an 88pin US engine it will be more involved to t/p it into a 55 pin car.

I was about to post what (I believe) Bill is saying: dropping a US varioram engine into a '95 would be exceedingly difficult. I assume you'd need a '96+ ecu, then you have to worry about the alarm and OBD2 port. Not sure what parts of the harness you'd have to replace, nor do I care frankly.

Not sure what others think of that graph, but it tells me that you get around +7% torque from like 3000 to 4200 rpm. Would be nice but doesn't get me too excited.

Okay...so for those with 993 Non-varioram converted to a Varioram, does a freer flowing cat/exhaust system help increase hp or torque?

Porsche did change the exhaust from Bischoff to Gillete. I wonder if there is any performance difference.
