Default Varioram and Power upgrade kit

I am toying with the idea of retrofitting a varioram system on my 95 993 to gain some low-mid range torque. Has anyone done this?

Secondly, has anyone heard of a official Porsche 210km power upgrade kit that consist of new piston set, cams, pulley, gaskets? I found out about this from the parts guy at the local Porsche dealer. Please don't ask me about the 210km figure as the parts guy could not explain either.

Thanks.

Stanley:

I think you are referring to the Factory 3.8 RS kit. This kit is comprised of 102mm P/C's, 6 new RS heads with bigger ports & valves, RS cams, RS lower intake manifolds, RS pulley, and sport mufflers. You will need the RS ECU, too.

You will need a Varioram intake system and your wiring harness will need modification to actuate that as well.

This setup is NOT cheap, but it works very very well,...........

Dear Steve, what is the approximate cost of such a RS upgrade and how much more power can it provide?

Phil, I noticed you have the light weight flywheel installed. Did you have any idling problems? Also, did the valve timing adjustment provide substantial difference?

Surely you mean 210 kW? Which is approximately 282 HP

Graham, you could be right if it converts to 282bhp. The spares guy at Porsche probably wasn't familiar with the kit. Thanks.

What about the slightly larger intake/exhaust valves in the varioram cars? Wouldn't it need them too?

Best mod will be to do supercharger with a stand alone ECU. Do the work yourself as well.

Abar:

The Factory kit comes with six new complete heads. This means that the bigger RS valves and ports are all there,....

That said, I'd do close-ratio gears in a NY minute over any engine mods.

I would start with installing a LWF clutch, a G50/21 gearbox and a good chip!
Installing a 3.8 kit is to expensive for the results you have.
The combination of the above is really unbelievable. I have a friend who has done this and his car is much faster than a normal varioram car. My car (I have the 3.8 engine, techart chip + exhaust + air intake) is only a little faster than his car....

Regards

Depending on how you are going to use your car...

Forget about small power increase, do the TPC Supercharger kit.... gain about 100 hp over stock, 134 with intercooler. Talk about smooth wide power band, totaly awesome. I don't recomend installing it yourself unless you are very knoweldgable. The kit and instructions are not complete!!! TPC is constantly making changes and these are NOT reflected in the kit parts nor the instructions. Euroquipe (Saint Charles, IL) did an awesome install, however TPC has to do the fine tuneing. When I was at TPC a couple of weeks ago, they said 'Oh yea, we now use a different drive belt and you need a shim to move the belt tensioner out'. Gee thanks, how about an e-mail or something so the latest parts could be used, etc... Would I do it again, most definetly!!!!!!
