That being said, is that not also true for every fall? I don't recall a time when sports car prices didn't soften approaching November
EXACTLY- Been that way every year. Wanna maximize your take selling a car like this, do it in July.

That’s what they said in 1984 when 911 SC prices were in the low teens and I bought one anyway. I heard it again in 2005 for wide body 993’s when prices were in the low $40k range and I bought one anyway. We see now how those opinions worked out.

The bottom line is people don’t know what prices will do, and if you’re not in the business of buying and selling cars, or don’t trade every year, my opinion is there’s never a better time to buy a 911 than the current. Trying to time the market is a losing proposition. The best-fit curve for 911s has been up and to the right for the last 50 years, despite flat periods. We’ve just moved into a period where everyone seems to be trying to get rich off a car rather than purchasing for the enjoyment of driving.

Can't agree more. Sad thing is that these cars are just too special to sit in someone's garage and go unused. With these prices, I fear more and more of that is happening...

It's all perspective.

Sure what you said may happen but I don't see a reason for it.

For example, I have no desire for a new 911 and would not trade my 993 for one. I know 100% there will never be a 911 that's made which will eclipse my desire for the 993.

I could drive the wheels off my 993, always sell it for a profit, or rebuild anything worn out and repeat for the next few hundred thousand miles.

Maybe someone with an ultra low mile 993 that paid huge money for it continues to preserve the mileage to maximize it's value. What's it matter to me? Nothing.

I don't scoff at that, I'm glad people can be in the position to preserve some of the special examples.

At the end of the day I always find it amusing, peoples emotional reaction to the use of machines that fall outside their range of normalcy.

2,000 miles, The Horror! How can you go through life and not drive it more!!

200,000 miles, What a shame! Would be worth so much more if someone didn't drive the wheels off of it.

So used too little, used too much, what's wrong with you. Middle miles, no one cares. Even if someone says, -OH THAT's the PERFECT amount of MILEAGE!!!. Means nothing.

Do what's right for you.

Just my opinion anyway

Good post, especially from someone called INTMD8!

Fair point. But this Fall, 993 prices are declining and the market is softening from a historic high -- that's what's different. 993 prices had never been higher. And, the arguments regarding anchor value, etc. are compelling, but I think the truth is that unique examples and great color combos will continue to get good money (e.g. a 100k mile Ocean Blue Metallic C4S with an attractive cashmere/black interior sold for $138k this week on BaT while a standard black on black C4S with 36k miles sold for $5k less 10 days earlier). I wish it were as simple as you say, but it isn't. There's nuance to parse out here.

I don't recall saying it was simple.

Acknowledged that many factors may be an influence but one I find notable is when it gets cold out, sports cars get cheaper.

True, late spring is always the best time to sell a sports car here in the NE US.

yes but you quoted two very soft periods in the market. good buys i congratulate you. however today we have just been in a period of skyrocketing prices for these cars and now there has been a tremendous loss of wealth in the capital markets, crypto and possibly soon in real estate.
