I guess I don't really understand the sentiment you're trying to convey. You are lamenting that lower budget enthusiasts are no longer able to get into WB 993s, while at the same time you apparently hated your ownership experience because you bought low cost cars that needed a decent bit of work? No offense, just trying to get where you're coming from.

Even if you have a rather valuable 993, the biggest potential downside is you drive the wheels off of it and still make money if you decide to sell?

even with the top-end work and sport seats, at 187k miles, $135k is a reach. i doubt this would be the time i would attempt to flip a well publicized WB. the market already spoke and money is getting tighter at the moment for most.

$85k with fees. Prices are finally starting to normalize. With another 75bps rate hike today and many more to come will be interesting to see what the future holds in 993 prices.

I probably wasn't clear. For context, at the time (2016ish) these "cheap" cars were bought that were drivers all in at 50k, while really nice mid mileage examples might've been $70-80k. Driver 996 GT3s back then were about as much and 997.1 GT3s not much more.

for the money, at the time - I thought at ~$50k all in they were enjoyable, if not old cars that needed expensive work in the multiples of $1k and above that was tolerable. CCU failure - ship it to Norway to Tore. Invasive labor on wires/plug job, there goes more $. Trim pieces that crack, go search for unobtainum NLA parts from wreckers kinda thing. For my brother, sheared bell housing pivot boss (documented issue) which resulted in the whole $25k while you are in there engine out work 1000 miles into ownership.

Many will disagree here which is fine - but my parallel life 6 years of daily living with my 997 has proven itself to be as reliable as a camry with performance vastly better than the 993 - several drives across the country, in midwest winter, in california summer, to Vail - it's been the everything everywhere car that did Costco runs on the same weekend as I did Laguna Seca. Now - i'm the outlier in what I ask of my car, but I couldn't ask the same of the 993 without feeding it cash constantly to get similar levels of enjoyment.

So in 2022, all the above are exacerbated that folks wouldn't dare to daily drive their 993 due to value, parts are even more NLA (good luck finding console trim switches for $200 or less) and the cars go up in value but go down in usage because of the aforementioned issues with age. Going back to my brother - no one will insure his car for agreed value because it's not garaged and his only car, so it becomes a liability to own. Yet at the end of the day it's a car, that just years ago were by many folks being driven regularly without value speculation or much worry.

I want to say I'm the anti-porsche, porsche owner but I think my stance is not out of the norm when you go to luftgekuhlt and see all the ratty 911s that used to rack up 200k + miles sitting against the low mileage unobtainium PTS cars. They're both rad to see, but for me life's too short to not enjoy the heck out of driving my cars without worry.

It just sounds like you are not a good fit for owning a 993. Most here wanted a 993 specifically and enjoy it. It sounds like you want to compare it to other generations and that's fine, but it's obvious you don't have a passion for the 993 by doing so.

@hexagone it sounds like you bought a flood damaged car. Most people don’t have experiences like that with a 993.

If you kept it, you’d still be able to sell it for a $50K profit even after everything you put into it. And your scenario is a worst case and not typical.

I have a 993 and a 997 TT - vastly different cars, different driving experience, and well, they are 10 years apart in technology.

The 993 is one of the most satisfying experiences one can have in a car, while alone.
The 997 TT can do it all...civilized, comfortable daily, or go beast mode and run with modern cars...and is starting to have "classic" looks.

Sorry, I see a 150k+ miles with two car fax dings for $85k as "strong" money. That's a car one either modifies the hell out of, or goes full blown track car. That is not a speculative "collectible" or an "investment" car.

IMO "prices normalizing" would be going back to the fall of 2020.
