A Plug-and-Play, DIY-Installable 993 Immobilizer Defeat

The IMMO BLOCK's only job is to keep the immobilizer "mobilized" -which it does, but it doesn't know (nor does it care) what the state of the door locks is - that's the domain of the Alarm Control Unit which is always watching for "illegal" actions or sequences. As far as the Immo is concerned, the car is startable, but the ACU is in the background looking at the locks and may squawk (alarm) if you do what you suggest. Easy to test, though. The system was a lot simpler when it was just the ECU and ACU but when the Immo got band-aided in to add remote locking and "modern" anti-theft fetures, things got messy. Kind of like Windows on top of DOS.

Hi Jay !

It looks promising. I’ll give an update in a week or 2 after further testing but if the prototype I have installed has no unwanted side effects, there is indeed an easy immobilizer defeat that doesn’t require hardware or firmware mods to the ECU, Alarm unit, or an R61 bypass. The “fix” involves the addition of a small circuit board (~sq inch?) inside the immobilizer. I’m in the process of working out the best way to package this solution to make it an easy DIY. A PCB needs to be designed so I’m trying to gauge how much interest there is before proceeding further. Stay tuned....

For those just tuning in, much has changed. The device is now 100% plug-and-play.
(See posts #145, 146). Post 184 shows how the unit installs. RL'ers have beta-tested
early prototypes and reviews can be found at posts 116, 117 and 138. A Group

I got my two. The 98 car it installed very easy and works as described. My 97 is going to need a little more oomph to get the gauge out but I’ll push it from the frunk side which should be easy. Great product!

Yes you can. Remove the rubber weatherstripping right under the cowl and pull off the plastic panel. I was actually going to push the gauge from the rear but it was so easy to just reach in and pop the gong relay out and throw your immobilizer on. You can also remove the hood strut to give you a bit more room. Here is a pelican article pretty much outlining what I just did. https://www.pelicanparts.com/techart...lb_Removal.htm

Just installed it. Did a quick test - works as advertised. Literally plug and play. Brilliant.
First impression - nicely put together unit. Solid construction.
I had to use pretty firm pressure to lever out the gauge. I suspect it's never been removed. I used a nylon pry bar wedged under the rubber lip to work it out.
It's tight behind the gauge and the gong relay needed some wiggling to break free.
Otherwise, it's a 5-10 minute job. I did replace the battery with a lithium so hopefully don't have to mess with it for awhile.
So far so good - cool product!

You may not have to use your FOB for 3 years...
