This is a brilliant idea. The only change I would make is to have it replace the clock on the right and make it a touch screen.

Are you sure about this? The link posted above shows both the double din and the single din unit with an Apple CarPlay display. Additionally, both images are copyrighted Porsche images. I'm thinking its going to be available on the single DIN unit for older vehicles as well.

I checked the fine print. Apple Car Play is available for the single DIN unit, but not Android Auto. I'm so bummed. Would have purchased one if it had Android Auto.

enough chit-chat, how do we buy this thing? is this an announcing 10 months in advance thing like other porsche products?
I want something on my shelf I can stare at until I make the jump to sloppily install.

Ugh. So you can have one nice thing in the sea of plastic? Still not enough to overcome the desire to skip the whole 996 series and start at the 997 if you want a water pumper. Not that they're bad cars, just not my preference.

*sarcasm implied

I wish they would have integrated the USB and mini jack into the unit.

Your idea reminded me of the gauge style head units boats use. Something like this could replace
the clock. But, have it look the part not like this JBL unit below. You could ditch the single din radio all together.
Add a RS radio delete panel. Just a thought.

The clock could definitely work. You'd lose some screen real estate and have electrical the complexity of another 10 or so inputs for each warning light signal. The touch screen is a plus, for sure.

Remember this Porsche Classic Radio we're all talking about wasn't originally built by Porsche. If my memory is correct, a lesser known standalone company (can't remember the name) built this retro looking single DIN radio using off-the-shelf software and navigation. I think it's actually Windows CE for those familiar with this kind of thing. Pure speculation, but the radio probably caught the eye of someone at Porsche who then signed an exclusive license agreement with guaranteed revenue to the supplier. No reason someone else can't build a better mouse trap and try to sell it to Porsche, or sell it standalone. Anyone know how to engineer and manufacture a radio? I can help with the software

Its not an exclusive agreement, the same version is made for Land Rover and Jaguar.

Default Bat phone conversion?

Just an idea but I wonder if the center phone console option (aka bat phone) could be converted to accommodate the DIN 2. Coupled with the RS delete of the original slot, it could be the best of both worlds. For me, the molding would have to look just right before taking the plunge.

Just an FYI - I spoke to the local dealer. They say they expect to have these in hand by "late summer".

I am getting this installed Tuesday. I ordered it from Teile.com (who get it from Porsche Germany) because Porsche UK is refusing to work, whereas Porsche germany is business as usual.
