at what point does it make sense to buy a second car?
I recently got my 992T and I love it. But I keep feeling bad about putting all the miles on it so I’m considering getting a second car maybe a $50,000 Honda pilot. However, my wife thinks I’m crazy, because she thinks I’ll only drive 992. And I think she’s right. So does it make sense to buy a $50k second car to keep the miles down or just drive the 992 12-15k miles a year? I’m very torn..
I've had my '23 C4S since February 2023. So basically 18 months. It's just shy of 36,000 miles. Don't feel guilty about the miles.
Obviously my daily. Take it to the office. Take kids to school. Bring them home from activities. Road trip here or there with a single kid. Many Sundays get a fun drive. Drive it to the ski hill with snowboard on top in winter. Lake in the summer. You get the idea.
I also live outside of town so most of my drives are highway. There is also some 3,000'+ of elevation between home and office. Also have a choice of three decent twisty roads between office and home. Almost never in stop and go traffic. So Goldilocks driving conditions.
The car is so damn fun to drive. I hate taking something else on the days I have to shuttle 3+ kids at once or need something big from Home Depot.
I'm not spending $160k+ to park it in my garage. I drive the wheels of my 911s.
We've had three Honda pilots. All bought new. The 2005 was bomb proof and hit 200k before it was side swiped by a Cayenne of all things. Our 2017 (150k miles) pilot has had some issues but decent. My wife has a '23 pilot. I don't like it but it's been solid for 50k miles. She does a lot of kid hauling.
If I was considering what you are I would build a financial model of the costs. Tax, title, license, insurance, maintenance, fuel, depreciation, etc and run that against various mileage scenarios between the two. Don't forget a variable for smiles per mile.
Bro, that's a personal dilemma I don't know you'll find an objective answer to.
If I had to hedge my bets, I'm pretty sure the majority of 911 owners here have at least one other car they use regularly as their daily beater.
IMO driving a 911 as your sole vehicle for daily use isn't wise long term so another car to use and abuse is not only common but even sound financial sense. Whatever price point you choose is up to you (*and by that I mean your wife*) and your wallet.
Oh man if you can safely park and daily the T, do it!!!! I work in an urban area and can never take my 911 to work! I envy the people who work in remote business parks and can stare at their 911 out their office window.
ps don’t get a Honda pilot or passport. my wife had a passport and it was a pile!
If the 911 actually fits most of your driving needs, then consider yourself lucky and pile as many miles on as you can. If I didn't have a large dog I would get rid of my pickup and use the 911 for absolutely everything
I drive mine everyday. It is a car. Not an investment. If I had a Sport Classic then probably not daily but why own it if you do not drive as often as you can. Owning another depreciating car to save on the 911 is not my choice. Plus you have insurance, maintenance etc. you have to do all of that time based pretty much for the 911 regardless of miles. So what are you saving, resale? You save resale but you just spent $50k on a Honda??
If you have no need to shuttle kids and stuff around then drive that 992 into the ground and enjoy the heck out of it. I have a BMW X3 but only because I need to haul bikes and paddle boards around. When I was in my 20s I had a 300ZXTT as my only car. It was a 2 seater with a good sized trunk where I could fit my road bike in the back. It was my one and only daily driver for about 6 yrs and I sold it with 93k miles on it. I loved every minute I had with that car.
If I didn’t have to carry other stuff I would have no problem putting 10K+ mi/yr on my Porsche. In fact I put 2-3x more miles on my 992S than my BMW X3. I’d do the same even if I had a GT3. Buy these cars to enjoy, not to collect or invest. If I had to drive a Honda Pilot the vast majority of the time as my daily driver, I’d probably kill myself. As a car enthusiast, life is too short to drive boring cars.

I’ve had various daily drivers since 2017; currently it’s a 2021 Toyota Corolla SE. The 992 is not suitable for shuttling around police gear, and I now commute from Nevada to California (…and back) every week. A daily driver is a must for me, but everybody’s use case is different. Why do you feel that a $50k Honda Pilot is necessary for daily duty though? Why not get something cheaper like a Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, etc.?
I bought an RS6 a couple years ago thinking it would be my daily, but as Audi is moving to electrification I thought to save the miles... so now I'm expecting a Targa GTS lol. That being said, I've decided I need a daily that I can abuse for long family road trips and hauling people and furniture, so I'm looking at getting the new Kia Carnival.

Think about it this way.
Will your T depreciate less than 50k because you actually spent another 50k to keep the miles low on the T?
