at what point does it make sense to buy a second car?

So to update. I live in Florida and Monday was a very very rainy day. Almost died a few times and had to go around many areas of flooding. And unfortunately weather like this is not abnormal to us. So I just purchased a 25 pilot elite awd. I was honestly very impressed with the car. And I’m happy that Honda has continued to offer the natural aspirated v6 and not some stupid turbo 4. Msrp was $54k, got $5k off so was happy. Fits 8. Nice contrast to the 992T

I didn’t dare take my 911 out until today. Took my Honda CRV all week instead. Lot of roads were flooded 2-5 feet with lots of totaled cars floating from people stupid enough to try and drive thru it. Couple roads are still flooded.

I have two cars myself, 2020 BMW M2 CS for a daily driver and a 2024 718 Cayman S for a weekend car. You definitely don’t need a boring car like a Pilot or another stupid SUV or pickup truck for a daily driver.

With the technology these days making working from home possible and accepted in my field, I have decided that driving in awful weather is unnecessary. As a result, I’m comfortable owning two RWD cars (without winter tires) despite living in New England. That said, my wife does have an SUV but the bottom line is we just don’t really go out if the conditions are that bad out. I have gotten caught in bad weather with one of the RWD cars and I just drive slowly. It seems like a similar approach could work in places that flood.

I have a 2024 Carrera T and a 2023 Land Rover Defender 110.
3 kids (7/4/2) and 3 dogs.
The T works when it’s just two kids and I put on the Porsche cargo box on it which has worked out really well this summer and added some utility for longer trips.

it really is. Can pick up a good chunk of groceries, bring the wife and dog to the beach, show some speed when you want it, and be comfortable driving it all the time. Understand for those in much harsher climates where you would literally get stuck or flooded in the 992, but otherwise this car has proven to be a true do GADA car.

+1 . Appreciation on the Tacoma is actually better than late model 911. Traded in my 2015 4Dr. Tacoma V6 with 40k miles in 2023 for $10,000 more than I paid for it with 12k miles in 2016. Son traded in my 2006 Tacoma 4 dr. TRD Off Road with 80k miles in 2022 for $3,000 more than I paid for it when I bought it brand new in 2006. Traded in my 2013 991.1S in 2022 for $10,000 more than I paid for it in 2019. COVID made the used car market crazy. Only time in my life that I have owned used cars that appreciated.

Shocking! Bought a new 2006 crew cab Tacoma TRD Off Road in 2006 for $14,000. Gave it to my son in 2016 and bought a used 2015 Tacoma. Son drove it another 6 years and traded it for a new 2022 Toyota Camry in 2022 for $34,000 and dealer gave him a $17,000 trade in. Granted that the TRD Off Road 4WD crew cab is probably the most desirable used Tacoma on market but I was still very surprised. So I then traded in my 2015 Tacoma for a new one and it had appreciated in 7 years too. Used Tacoma and Jeep markets are ridiculous. Check Autotrader. But in fairness, you also have to consider inflation adjustment as $14k in 2006 compared to $17k in 2022…not the same…...but still surprised and pleased.
