at what point does it make sense to buy a second car?

I have a 1-year-old and a 4-year-old. The T with LWBS as my daily wouldn't cut it, even with the rear seat belts I added. I have a paid-off "cheap" 2013 LR4 as my daily beater, and the wife has a smallish SUV
If it's just myself, myself and one of my kids, or my wife, I try to take the 911.

ya, I guess I do-- I work 6 day/wk and the 911 usually does 5 of them.. the rubicon might get a rainy day or two per week and the F8 maybe gets 1 or 2 days/mo.. Never really thought about it but ya, I guess at this pace, it could be 10k/yr but I have a feeling, it'll only work out to be about 7500/yr which won't be bad.

Current sitch:-
992 C2s Cab.
996.1 Taco
BMW X5 Xdrive 40i
we both love driving the BMW as a daily and driving it i care less about restaurant parking and long road trips hauling a bunch of crap and our bicycles...airport runs etc..
The Taco will likely go to an auction site next year, then later on we will either trade the X5 for a CPO lexus or maybe get a KIA suv,
JD Power reliability stats show Honda has gone way off the boil, Buick at #3 Chevy at #4
Porsche Number 6 but only by one point over the mini and Chevy, KIa is now at #8 and Genisys Hyundai and Honda are down in the pack... Lexus and Toyota are Gold and Silver you know their usual spot...

I put 223,000 very hard miles on this 911 back in the 1970's, finally when the A/C quit in the summer and it was showing rust, my girlfriend convinced me to get something more comfortable. I should never had sold this one. I beat on this poor car relentlessly with minimum maintenance and it never spent one night in a garage.
These 911's are tough.

There is one problem with using your 911 as a “fun car” and having another car as a daily.
You get bored of your daily and you start wanting to upgrade your daily.
That’s what I did after I got my 911. During my time owning a 992 as my “sports car”, and then later the R8, here was my daily driver progression:
Till ‘21: Acura MDX
‘21-‘22: BMW M340i
’22-‘24: BMW M850i
’24-now: BMW M8 Competition
So as you can see, if you love your sports/supercar and you miss it when you have a daily driver, you might be like me and upgrade your daily driver until—OOPS!—it’s now on par or even faster than your supercar!
Don’t let that happen to YOU, folks!

buy cars you like to drive then drive them. Don't buy a car you dont like to keep miles off the ones you like.

I recently got my 992T and I love it. But I keep feeling bad about putting all the miles on it so I’m considering getting a second car maybe a $50,000 Honda pilot. However, my wife thinks I’m crazy, because she thinks I’ll only drive 992. And I think she’s right. So does it make sense to buy a $50k second car to keep the miles down or just drive the 992 12-15k miles a year? I’m very torn..

I definitely don't think yiu will regret a second car. But if you genuinely like driving all of your tasks in the 911 then I don't think you should spend another $50k to save $XXK in increased depreciation on the 911.
For me I have several other cars and I love it that way. I have a crappy 5 mile each way commute in a city. It's all stop and go, flat, and straight. Boring. I hop in an electric car and I never worry about warming the engine, or beating on it too early. I just GO and blast stop light to stop light. Then when I feel like getting a drive in, I take out one of the sports cars and enjoy the experience. I personally like the big open space of an SUV for the daily running of errands.
