at what point does it make sense to buy a second car?
#61
I recently got my 992T and I love it. But I keep feeling bad about putting all the miles on it so I’m considering getting a second car maybe a $50,000 Honda pilot. However, my wife thinks I’m crazy, because she thinks I’ll only drive 992. And I think she’s right. So does it make sense to buy a $50k second car to keep the miles down or just drive the 992 12-15k miles a year? I’m very torn..

Plenty aren't (garage queens that is). Look at the beating they get at PEC's and the like, they can take it.

Different folk, different priority, different consideration.
I would get 2nd car if you really want, the hell what others do/say.
or daily drive the 911 if thats what you really want.
However just my $0.02; despite it is tested and capable in sub-zero driving environment I would not drive any 911 in snow/winter conditions specifically because the engine is hanging low on the back and there is NO undercarriage cover underneath the engine (unlike most front engine car which has undercarriage cover under the engine)
That will get all of those road salt in nooks and crannies. Its going to be a headache if you keeping your winter driven 911 for a long time, unless you going to sell/flip it in 2-3 years time.

It really is fun having multiple cars if you can swing it… not only for purpose or mileage reasons, but for FUN reasons. Especially if they’re all fun in some way to drive, once you drive one for a week or two straight and then get into another, it’s an entire different feeling and happiness. I buy and drive cars for feeling and EMOTION only. I don’t believe in point a to b concepts. So, for me, like today actually, getting in the F8 was SOOOO FUN after driving the 911 every day for past 3 weeks (except one day with the jeep)-/ been really enjoying the 911 and been playing with it and pushing it etc but getting into the F8 today just rocked my world like I had just bought it and was the first drive… was too fun. Get multiple cars!

lol, good point, hahah but I was just trying to say that the reason for multiple car is not just cos they have a purpose or to keep value higher with lower miles... but ya, solid point. Guess I got carried away

"If you haven't driven one of these on snow tires in 8-10 inches of snow, you have no idea what a 996 Turbo is capable of doing,” says Thalmann. "Obviously, you have to increase stopping distances and plan your turns a little differently due to momentum, but this car just grips and bites and is unbelievably nimble in the snow. Remember, it snows a lot in Germany and that's where they tested it."

All depends on situation and personal preference. I have two kids so convenient for me to have alternatives. But also use the fun cars as much as possible to go to office, run errands, or just spirited drives with or without one or both of my sons. 50% M340i, 25% M2 Comp MT and 25% C4S PDK. If I didn’t have kids, I wouldn’t have the M340i.

Tundra on Kings for off-road….
Wife does a Lexus DD (GS350F) and Armada if hauling kids, but that’s dwindling…..kids are IS300 Lexus…Porsche is in the garage, not pictured….
The 5.0 V8 Lexus is my favorite DD car, love the 992 911S…but for daily - the Lexus V8 is just way different than everything else on the road.
The 911 is Chalk gray as well LOL - lots of shades of gray
The 911 wouldn’t be a comfy daily.

^^^^^This. Porsches are not fragile like some Itallian sports car models. No reason to baby a 911. Anyone who has been around this stuff for many is well aware of that fact. This is one of the 911s extremely strong points.
