For those here who think that they want something more mechanical, spend about 2 hours in an Exige S, and you will rue the day that you ever thought to yourself that the 911 was too plush or boring.

Between the unassisted steering, the cabin noise, complete lack of NVH material (or even the pretense of it), and a chassis and cabin that gives new meaning to the word "demanding" with the rigid seats and ingress/egress that would make a gymnast wince, mechanical becomes less of something one yearns for and more of something one respect and prefers to admire from afar. Very afar.
Reminds me of my 993. Removed 500 lbs and every piece of rubber in the suspension and driveline. It's like an exposed nerve. That's not always a good thing. Driving cars like that in traffic is miserable. You have to pick your moments...traffic is light, weather right. In those times, it all makes sense and everything is harmonious and fluid and stimulating. Taken outside of its comfort zone and the car is unhappy. Unlike a modern 911, there is no filter...whatever the car feels, you feel. For better or worse.

That is absolutely NOT what I would want from a standard issue 911. Porsche would go broke trying to sell a car like that. Nobody wants it.

That's a little harsh - I don't agree.

In the end, if a sports car is boring, get rid of it. If "boring" even enters your brain - dump it. There is ZERO reason to keep a boring sports car. Doesn't make sense.

I’m of the opinion that any modern Porsche can feel a bit boring in around town driving. I base that on the fact that I often choose to drive my 89 Carrera over my 981 Spyder when it’s around town driving. I can use more of the power band in the antique which creates a more fun experience.

Porsche has made it so simple to drive fast it seems boring. The 911 is such a honest car and doesn't have any bad behaviors to speak of. When you look at how it handles and the fact it's not a spooky car to drive it could seem boring. I've driven some high end cars that when it goes bad you aren't going to fix it!! At least my skill set won't. I don't need to always be fast as long as I look fast!

So when I take our SUV to the market, that’s boring. When I take my 992 to the market, I drive the long way. It ain’t boring.

Folks, if you want boring get a Toyota Camry for heavens sake. Now that’s boring, no matter where you are or how you drive it.

Back from a 4k KM road trip to the east coast over 6 days in this:

Not once did the car present itself as boring.

So is a Bugatti Veyron, and a Huracan or Aventador.

And, so, your point is ... what exactly?

No BMW feels like a 992. I have an M2 and it’s a fun car, but my previous 992C2s had way more tactile feedback and control.
It's an unfair comparison, but the hydraulic rack in my 335 was excellent imo. It's been a while and that was my first fun car though, so I'm sure I'm looking through rose colored glasses.

3 series from the e90 and back had really good steering. I bet if OP compared a 996 to an e46, he could probably make the same statement re: Porsche vs BMW.

Porsche keeps pushing the envelope when it comes to electric assist steering, but they’ve got a ways to go before it feels alive like a top tier hydraulic rack.

Boring is a state of mind. You can change your mind.

I love the the marketing statement Porsche made some time ago. I can only paraphrase it. Porsche doesn’t build something for everyone, but something that is everything to someone.

If the car doesn’t make you happy or excited, find something that does. There is no shame in that. Like food, you spit out a few things until you find the things you do like.

What is important is the passion you have in life. Make it count and don’t waste time because you are going to be dead a very long time!

I wanted to build cars that were not something to everyone but meant everything to some.

Totally agreed.
BMW M cars and 911 are two different animals.
Both are great cars.
I love my 2020 M2 comp, I still miss it. But when I get into my C2, I totally forgot about how much I misses my M2.

Cheers.

Isn't the beauty of the 992 that you can make it bespoke to what ever you dream is. RWD,AWD,pick a power level, 3 body styles, interior packages, seating, 6 & 7 speed or PDK, brakes, suspensions, PTS, trims and on... It seems like some buyers get overwhelmed and have to ask the Forum.
Commuter car, cruiser, spprts car ,racer...What's your mission?
As for a commuter, my drive is 11 miles and 15 traffic lights. Add to the mix ,poor road surfaces and dim/tailgating drivers.
That's what my Cayenne and Pick Up do best.
Make mine a 7 Speed GTS Coupe, RWD, LWB,s PCCBs' , PTSand sprinkle in some CF.
I want each trip to be an occasion and not a chore.
To each ,their own.
