Overall, I believe the consensus would choose the Porsche 911 over any BMW in terms of how the design holds up over a period of time.
I'm not sure that I've heard any real complaints about the evolution of the 991 and 992 models (apart from the overall size....and those complaints are rather rare). I believe these will age extremely well.

Point taken and based on those two, I would totally agree. However, I'd call that a bit of a unique scenario. It's taking the very best of one and the very worst of the other.

I would guess you're a younger gent and in a great position if you can contemplate either car, kudos to you. As others have said, buy fun/practical first since you have a family to haul around with in spirited fashion and get the M3. I did a cross-shop with a Panamera, Audi A7 and 650 Gran Coupe, I bought the latter and love it, four door goodness and pretty quick though not as quick as an M3. I'm keeping it when my 911 arrives and at 62 when it arrives, it will be a dream come true. The 911 will always be around and seemingly just gets better (putting on flame suit here) so wait till the fam gets older and you and the Mrs. can take nice trips together in a 911. Good luck!

Can't wait for the 2030 X7.
I can tailgate in the back and grill my meat in the front.
Win. Win.

I appreciate this sound feedback, a true statement.
I'm cross shopping 992 and M3 CS (when released) next year. I have an F80 M3 that I love; it checks all boxes for me and is extremely practical. Splitting hairs, but the only annoyance with my current car is the lack of OEM Android Auto integration, I've mitigated the issue with Bimmertech's solution but it's not the same.
The car will be my daily driver and split duties hauling our small family with my wife's SUV. As a military brat, I grew up in an e30 which became my first car in HS; my current my 3rd M3 (LOVE THEM). 911s are the natural progression I'm sure you all know.

I was looking to add another fun car to my garage... Something to replace Mazda6 and still have 4 seats for when I need more than 2 for family... I was looking at M3, then M4... But I'm so glad I got scared of new BMW monstrous designs and ever growing weight and size and dug deeper!
So now I have M2 Comp, and it's awesome. In my opinion M2 is last real BMW as in "driver's car" - light, nimble, beautiful and super fast. And it looks like BMW is looking to fix that with rumors of new M2 coming
Also, there is surprise amount of room in the back seats. A regularly sized adult can be there without discomfort, and my ~5'4" kids can seat there all day in complete comfort (unlike 911 back seats designed for small dwarfs with no legs)

I LOVE my M2C. It's just a great little car. That it's likely to have a relatively flat depreciation curve is just a bonus.

As a former owner of an OG M2, and a current 1M owner, I might argue that the E90 3-series and 1M were the last of the real BMW driver's cars. BMW just has not figured out their electric steering.

me also. I’ve had two and i really like the tactile feedback, proportions and size/weight.
The BMW M3 has gotten so big and heavy that it’s more like an AMG Merc. 4000lbs. At which point, I’d just get an AMG Merc.
That weight, day after day, wears on you if you’re a driving enthusiast. Sure the car feels nimble for what it is, but every time you brake that car? You remember how large the car has gotten and horsepower cannot hide that.
I feel like this discussion is more like an M3 for daily needs (at which point lots of other cars come into play) and a more true sports car. I don’t think an M3 really scratches the itch.
