I was looking to add another fun car to my garage... Something to replace Mazda6 and still have 4 seats for when I need more than 2 for family... I was looking at M3, then M4... But I'm so glad I got scared of new BMW monstrous designs and ever growing weight and size and dug deeper!
So now I have M2 Comp, and it's awesome. In my opinion M2 is last real BMW as in "driver's car" - light, nimble, beautiful and super fast. And it looks like BMW is looking to fix that with rumors of new M2 coming
Also, there is surprise amount of room in the back seats. A regularly sized adult can be there without discomfort, and my ~5'4" kids can seat there all day in complete comfort (unlike 911 back seats designed for small dwarfs with no legs)

"feel" could probably be subjective, but fwiw (if anything) and strictly speaking straight line from rolling speeds, the G80 M3 is slightly faster than a 992 S (60-130 is 9.0s, vs 9.3s). Even bigger difference compared to base 922. But again, if that really matters to someone.

it’s an odd thing we are talking about this car in the same decision tree as a 992.
Had a 2020 M2 comp, best M car ever (coming from 2012 M5, 2013 M6, and 2012 M3). Sold it when my 992 arrived back in Oct 2021. Regret it everyday. M2 is probably the last pure M.
If I had the bucks and not have to pay my kids college tuitions, I would have kept the M2 as my daily and 992 for weekends.

Driving a manual m4, hunting for a C2S allocations now.
Long story: was lusting for a 911 for a long time. Back in 2019, I was offered a showroom 991.2 C2S, the car was loaded with a 140k sticker. I wasn't so sure about the color (full red leather interior on guards red with red instrument cluster, red clock, and red middle console piece, the guy configured the car must be on crack), the car was sitting on the dealer's showroom for almost 4 months, and offered me 7% off on initial inquiry. I declined the offer because of the color, probably the most regretting thing I have done in buying cars. After the covid started, can't get anything from porsche. On Aug 2020, saw this velvet blue 6MT in a bmw dealer's lot, bought it with 14k under msrp. The M4 is great as a daily, very practical, the back seat was enough for an adult, can load a lot of things when back seats are set down, far more than enough for daily driving, and more confortable then 911.
Everything of the M4 was great until I drove my friend's 991.1 GT3. Needless to say, now, I am back to the place to wait for a C2S allocation. Refusing to pay any ADM, probably will be a long wait for me.
BMW comes with 3 years maintence plan, so no maintence cost other than tires and breaks. If budget is not a huge problem, instead of just one M3, maybe get a small suv (mazda CX5?) for family purpose, and get a 911 as a fun car? Since the 911 holds value so well, the total cost of owning it shouldn't be too bad. Just think it as putting 50K in a saving account when buying a 911.

Seriously? The G80 M3 is about 3800 lbs or 3925 lbs w/ xDrive. That's still lighter than a E39 M5 from the late 90s. The current F90 M5 is like 400-500 lbs heavier than a G80 M3. Same goes for size. a G80 M3 and a very old E39 M5 are both about 188 inches long. The F90 M5 is 195 inches long. Where are you getting the info that the M3 is heavier and larger than the M5?
As for cross-shopping these cars, there are a ton of M car owners who either own both or upgraded from an M car to a 911. I started looking at G8x M3s and M4s first before I decided to get a 992 S. Made the decision to switch to a 992 S when I realized the M4 was too big to provide the sports car feel I wanted. They are nowhere close to the same price point, but that doesn't mean people don't cross shop these cars. In fact, many more people do than you think.

my bad. Dimensions were based on an F10 M5 —and the G80 M3 is almost the same dimensions as that.
I understand subjectively that people might cross shop an M3 with a 911. But objectively, it is not a fair comparison to the M3, as good as it is. It’s a tuned 3 series so as that platform has gotten larger and heavier, you really can’t do that much with the chassis except to add more power. There’s no shame in that, it’s the philosophic difference between tuning a passenger car versus a sports car from the outset. When you look at the all of the weight saving measures Porsche enacted, the 991 is lighter than the 997 and then got lighter with the 992. That comes at a big cost and we all pay for that. BMW just does not invest that much in aluminum intensive construction.
If you can live with that design philosophy and spend $98,000 for that? Power to you.

Yeah, cross shopping is a weird thing. One year I was looking at Jeep Wranglers and the next thing I knew, I bought an M5. That was by far the weirdest one.
I’ve had other non-obvious ones - I was looking at an e63s when I ended up with a 992 C2s.
Most recently I was looking at Mini Coopers and ended up with the M2 Competition (which sorta makes sense, though price wise the M2 is almost double).
M4 and 992 makes perfect sense to me. There are a ton of BMW M “graduates” in the Porsche world, myself included.
In fact, I’ve noticed that there are a few of people who did the s2000 -> M3 -> 911 progression that I did.
