Too many carjackings? That's not true under any metric -- number or proportion to population . In fact, carjackings are way down for a decade or more. That's in large part to vehicles being keyless, having GPS on board, having other theft detection aids, cameras all over the place on streets and parking lots.

On to this topic, who would ever want any BMW over a 911?

Not all 911s are created equally. No BMW can hold a candle to a GT3 or TTS. Base/S is a totally different story and there are plenty of BMW past and present I would take over a base 911, E92 M3, 1M, M2CS to name a few.

The 911 is best as a fun, driver focused sports car.

But for a daily that you take to work? I have no idea why people daily 911’s, I would for sure take a Bimmer any day over a 911 for that duty.

New M2 no longer made in Germany. Now in Mexico. Sure it will be nice but feels weird.

The new M2 is hideous. As a former 2017 M2 owner, BMW styling on M2/3/4 is lost. I do like the 340 and LCI X3.

Last good M was the e92 M3. It was a whale but the V8 was awesome. E46 still the best.

So true, had them both. My old e46 M3 though, what a beast. Miss it to this day.

I agree, except…. I can’t handle the front end of the new M3. I’m still pissed at BMW for putting those nostrils on it. So I went with a 992 and after a full year and a half of daily driving it, had to add a X3 to the mix.

But make no mistake, I would have been perfectly happy with the new M3 as a daily otherwise.

HOWEVER, I never would have found out how magical a 992 is. I still can’t believe the ride and handling of that car.

I've owned two BMWs, and will never buy another one. Their build quality is just plain awful, and the cost to repair is unreasonable, especially when the repairs are due to design defects. Porsche maintenance cost is also high, but my personal experience is that their reliability is more than worth the higher price paid.

If you want a car for 50,000 miles and then trade it at a fairly steep loss, buy the BMW. If you keep your cars for a while and want it to start up and drive where you intend to go every single day buy the Porsche.

I daily my base 992, came from a previous gen M3. It’s mostly a personal use daily. It absolutely is a great daily and a fantastic car. It’s one of the few true sports cars that is somewhat practical, has back seats, a decent frunk, a comfortable ride, all the creature comfort electronics, and a blast to track. My M3 felt like boat on the track, but that might not be a priority, it was for me. All that said if you’re going to shuttle the fam around, need the space to transport bikes etc, get the M3. 911 is not that practical as an only car, we have an SUV for family duty.

A lot of what has been said I agree with (purpose of car, what you need it for etc) but for me it comes down to the experience: the 911 is designed and built for what it is, the M2/3/4 and AMG63s etc are sport versions of family sedans and coupes. I had a 63s before the 911 and it’s a terrific car - powerful, very nice interior, very good for daily duties etc…but I also knew it’s bones come from a family sedan and it feels like that even though 63s has much different chassis components and drivetrain than it’s family counterpart…but it still could not hide its heritage. Nothing wrong with it but I enjoy the 911 because it made for what it is from the ground up.

Same here. But there was no way I could keep it after two recalls for engine bearings and a leaking head gasket in only 30k miles

I have the M340i. Yes, I’m probably biased, but to me that’s the car to get for a DD unless you’re truly hell bent on the M3. It’s still plenty fast and doesn’t have that crazy front end.

What's missing here is Dinan. My e90 M3 ( thought it looked much better than the e92) and my current M2C had every Dinan option lihgter wheels and better tires. Full warranty coverage and still tens and tens of doillars shy of a 911. SO much better than straight from factory. Cannot say vs 911 but drove a Boxster S before going from M3 to M2C and it was lovely but quite boring on the street.
