Porsche is somewhat designing cars to cater to its most emerging and biggest markets. Engine displacements and cosmetic styling.

imagine the number of times the rest of the world blamed the US for their market. It’s about time we lose the crown.

They notice every detail and appreciate every nuance of styling. To say that the casual onlooker notices no difference means nothing to them, as the casual onlooker would say all 911’s look the same as they entered their Toyota/Honda. In my opinion, these new designs appeal to those that want to achieve a higher status with their ‘keeping up with the Jones’s’ friend group. Why are these new ones so expensive while also introducing even more substandard, plastic materials on the exterior. It’s obvious to anyone following Porsche that these new 911 deigns are borrowed from the panemera (Rear spoiler, interior, overall size) and Cayenne (front grill) and I’m perosnally very saddened by this. These new 911’s are losing their soles, maybe next model won’t even have a gear selector or steering wheel, just an Alexa Command bot and Tesla-like autopilot? I will admit I warmed up to the 991’s, but this is just another step in the wrong direction that I fear has become the new norm. Bigger, Heavier, less original styling, less driver involvement, quiter, more tech-y, and all with sky rocketing prices. (Remember when the 930 911’s were just above blue collar cars?)

I wish Porsche would follow the American muscle car producers and do some more throwbacks to the glory days of design. Modernization, vs their attempted ‘innovation’.

Long live the 997 and the Flat Six.
The thing is Porsche realized they can make a lot more money selling cars to those who want status symbols as opposed to those who want the ultimate sports car... that's why we are seeing the changes we are seeing. The average old man who buys a NEW 911 these days again will hardly explore the performance capabilities of their cars... they are more concerned in having a comfortable and refined coupe that has a prestigious look and heritage behind it.

I have to correct you... this is exactly what the "core market wants". How many people in society buy Singers? And for comparison... how many people in society buy luxury cars? Porsche is chasing after the market that will bring the m the most money.

Sometimes you get evolution, and sometimes devolution. The 992 may be a mutation of the gene line.

I'll stay out of responding to this, and would ask others stay away from the political comments. The mods clamp down on that very quickly and could take us off track here.

Isn’t this the strategy Mercedes employed? Make a big hunka junk and put the star as big as possible on the front and jack the price up? I don’t think that was all too successful for them and their brands reputation and I hope Porsche doesn’t follow suit. While I understand what you’re saying from the perspective of the bottom line over at Porsche, I think they accomplish their big # sales from the SUV’s, (much to the disdain of the 911 community) and it’s unnecessary to apply the same middle of the road, vanilla styling to the coveted flagship 911 model. As another poster pointed out, appealing to that type of audience lends itself to fashionable, unloyal customers, who lease them and then move onto the next brands ‘cool’ new car when it comes out. I’d be worried if I was Porsche that I was alienating loyal customers, but maybe I’m just a salty dog that likes the older models from when I was younger and more impressionable. All in all, when I look at these new 911’s and see comments about ‘mass appeal’, It kinda reminds me of a twisted life boat theory; Try and attract all buyers, and you’ll attract none.

No idea. I’m guessing neither, since he’s alive now. Do you think Uncle Gary is going to replace his red 997 with a 992 ?

Wifey questions this "nubbin" shifter. She is like WTF...does not fit with the car design.

Porsche is in the business of making money, not sports cars, with the exception of the small percentage of production allocated to GT cars. They have been since the Cayenne saved the marque and they've been transitioning ever since. At this point they're pretty much a lifestyle brand that sells a few, low production real sports cars.
