has anyone closely examined the standard shifter to the short shifter? From what I have been reading, the actual parts look super similar except for a shorter shifter piece. I wonder what would happened if you just cut it to the length of the short shifter kit?

You could try, The Stable near Pac Heights. They have done great work on my 991 in the past.

Just completed my install today. It was super straight forward. If you have done any sort of trim removal or car audio install in the past, it shouldn't take more than 90-120 minutes.
It took me about 90 minutes taking my time.
The overall change is noticeable. The throws are definitely shorter and direct. Effort has increased noticeably, probably about 20-30%.
Overall it's feels more direct, it didn't bring it back to the quality of my previous 981 Cayman, but a definite improvement.
If you have the confidence to do the install yourself, it's worth the price of admission, but I don't think I would be super satisfied if I had to pay for labor as well. I.E. there is a $400 in improvement, but not ~750-$800 if paying for labor as well.

I did this on my car over the weekend.
Installation took exactly 2 hours, with me being very careful not to break any clips and taking my time. Now that I know how everything in the center console is assembled, I would think that I could do it again in about an hour.
I was nervous about the shift **** removal as everyone seems to agree it's the toughest part of this. Mine wasn't bad at all. Instead of doing it in the car where there is little room to work I removed the shifter assembly (It's coming out anyway) and did the **** / boot removal in the vise on my work bench.
The result is exactly as others have described, a noticeable, but not overly aggressive change in throw and force required. I haven't gotten to do a ton of driving with it yet, but so far I am very happy.
I like that this is really a plug and play type mod. If you mark the cable locations as shown in the DIY and use the shifter alignment tool there is zero worry about having to play around with adjustments after the fact. It works like a factory part (because it is!).
