How are cam position sensors used as a profit center for BMW? I really don't know what function they perform, but are these installed so a monthly subscription service can be sold by BMW to the car owner?
Edit: This is what I found of the cam position sensor. "A camshaft position sensor is an electronic device that does what it suggests — monitor the camshaft position and speed — and feeds that data to the vehicle's engine control module (ECM). The ECM needs this data to control how much fuel enters the combustion chamber and ignition (spark) timing to ignite the fuel." Seems like these are required for the ignition timing.

Unlike Porsche VTS BS. BMW E46 cam position sensors (intake and exhaust) are require for double vanos to function properly. It's completely different from crank position sensor. I replaced both intake and exhaust cam position sensors on E46. Intake side took about 30 minutes and exhaust side took about 5 minutes to replace. They are easy peasy job. And parts are pretty cheap it was less than $40 for exhaust side I forgot how much I paid for intake side. BWM didn't install that magnetic sensors to rip off the customers. They usually wear out around 100k miles.

A modern electronically controlled engine has at least one position sensor per camshaft . If you have an economy inline four cylinder engine, you probably have one camshaft and one position sensor. Don't spread BS.
I didn't drink koolaid you are. Yes, car will run but they are necessary for double vanos and fuel injectors to function properly. If you remove sensor completely you'll lose oil like there is no tomorrow. So don't say you completely remove the sensors and ran the engine. Not only BMW basically every modern engines have camshaft position sensors in each bank INCLUDE IN YOUR 991. PART 991-606-106-10.

He isnt spreading BS, more like creating a metaphor.
Dollars to donuts he is not going to remove sensors from his 911.
bottomline: let us wait for the data to accumulate before making judgement on VTS.
Well it looks like I’m the next victim on here of the VTS failure…. I have a 2017 Cayenne S that is my wife’s daily…. I was using it yesterday to run some errands before I had to go to work (as I recently hydroplaned and impaled my daily… a 2017 Carrera 2S Cab… into a steel guardrail during a recent thunderstorm) 😩😭… and the car was starting for a second and then dying. Over and over again. . Anyway, I had the car towed to a local Indy mechanic that does great work…. He messaged me tonight that he scanned the codes and came up with the VTS failure…. He must have googled it and found this thread and sent it to me. He’s suggesting getting the car towed to the Porsche dealership for repair in this instance. I hope they will be able to get this resolved asap as we are in the process of moving and we need the car to pull the trailer to move a bunch of our crap to the new house over the next 3 weeks. 😕
Hopefully I get my replacement daily soon…( a 2014 Audi RS5) as now we are down two daily vehicles and I’m having to drive my Lotus Elise to work!😂 I REALLY wanted another 911 now (found a 2017 Targa 4 GTS I really wanted and almost bought) but decided to save $100k for now and wait a year or two until these crazy high prices come down some. 🙁
