Modifying 991.1 steering software

I would be happy to help you get it solved if you like, although I am in California. I accomplished getting the steering upgraded to GT3 with the Thinkdiag+ originally linked.
I Initially I made a bonehead mistake of selecting "electric steering wheel", which is of course the modules for the controls on the steering wheel itself. My 2015 C2S has a blank steering wheel with zero controls on it, just a horn. It took me 45 minutes of poking around to finally get the steering module changed.
The module I needed to select was "electric power steering". From there you can follow the directions explained above this post. Interestingly, after I made the change to GT3 steering in the app, the option changed to simply "power steering".
I am amazed at how many other things you can play around with in the module list. Does anyone have any other cool upgrades or changes to their car I should consider?

It’s a shame thinkdiag don’t make this clearer in their info as I would have just bought the version with the built in code reader.
Successfully coded Gt3 steering on my 2015 C2 with no errors. Looking forward to a proper test drive after work today

The difference is iOS vs android. The IOS Thinkdiag+ app doesn’t have the coding options available so you’ll need to borrow or buy a cheap android tablet to get the full features.

Every time I log back onto RL it costs me more money LOL
Kidding aside, thank you all, looks like for most of us the OBD Amazon tool is all we need. Will need to buy a cheap Android device as everything is IOS in my household

For the people on the fence on whether to spend the money on a coding tool, I'd take a look at the parallel 981 steering coding thread. A handful of people have offered up their help for free in various corners of the United States.

I was finally able to change the setting to GT3 with the Thinkdiag tool. Here are my initial impressions although I'm sure they will evolve after some time:
I have a 13 4S 7MT. For context I have a 09 997 TT 6MT and that's probably the biggest factor in my impressions.
I drove the car for about 30min with a bit of highway and a bit of twisty roads.
- Steering is much lighter at low speeds. Not sure if I like it. Maybe I will get used to it.
- it clearly loads up in corners. Need more testing but so far this is very subtle and also the best thing about this upgrade.
- feedback is barely different. maybe a tiny bit more.
Overall I'm not really impressed.
My problem is that my reference is the hydraulic steering of the 997 TT and its very unfair for the 991.
If the 997 TT steering is a 10/10, regular steering in the 991 was a 3/10 and with the GT3 change it maybe got to 5/10.
We'll see if my first impressions evolve with time.
PS: any way to shutdown the steering error from the dash with Thinkdiag?

I am reminded that anyone who has ever driven a C2 Vs C4/C4S has always pointed how C4 steering feel is noticeably different (I remember one tester saying it was more numb)
Is there any chance C2 guys are seeing/feeling more improvement than C4 folks?
Just a thought

I’ve driven a buddy’s 997TT a lot, and the steering is noticeably heavier/slower than a 997 C2 to me, even more so compared to a 991.2 like I own now. However, that can be a lot of things. It could be alignment would fix it up and make the steering feel more responsive. My 991.2 has slightly less feedback, but is noticeably more precise and more responsive feeling. The 991.2 C4S I test drove had similar feeling steering in traffic, but I didn’t have the chance to push it in the canyons like I have with my 991.2 or my buddy’s 997TT. It’s hard for me to say definitively, but overall I think the difference between AWD/RWD Porsche steering has become closer to each other in terms of general feel while inside limit of traction. Compared to older cars from 20+ years ago, modern AWD seems to be more seemlessly integrated. I hated AWD cars around 2000, I thought all the Subarus and Audis my friends had were terrible handling cars (I had RX7’s), and I had no idea why anyone would want one. Skip to today, and I own two AWD cars, which I think are two of the most amazing cars I’ve ever drive. Neither has an AWD system that even remotely resembles those old clunkers.

After hitting the twisty, fun routes in my area a couple times, my opinion is the steering upgrade on my 991.1 C2S is substantial better than the stock programming. I feel like the car is easier to toss into a a moderate speed corner and get it to grab the "on rails" handling grip. I can see why some don't like it much because it is very different. Another plus is it lightened the steering, making it much easier to handle at low speed. My petite partner appreciates the light feel because it simply takes less strength to get the car to do what you need or to do. My suggestion to those on the fence is to give the upgrade a shot, there are little tweaks to these cars that are this cheap.

Careful with buying a cheap android tablet to use the ThinkDiag+ app. I just bought a 10" Android 12 tablet thinking it would work. The ThinkDiag+ app is not compatible with the tablet I just bought so I am going to return it and pick up a cheap android phone.
