Modifying 991.1 steering software
#2
I’ve looked into this and frankly I haven’t seen evidence that anyone has successfully loaded the 991.2 steering software onto a 991.1. Naively changing the model designation on PIWIS doesn’t work either.
what does make a huge difference is disabling power steering plus (PSP) if your car came with it. Any dealer can do this and it’ll firm up your low speed steering.
having driven 991.1 and 991.2 back to back you do get a bit more feedback on the 991.2 but it’s hardly night and day. Upgraded suspension (eg; coilovers and roll bars) and alignment have a far more drastic effect on steering feel and can be quite a bit better (in terms of turn in and heaviness, not so much road vibrations) than 991.2 models with the right upgrades. In fact, suspension and geometry is largely why GT3/GT3RS feel so different purely on steering vs. a carrera.

I'm trying to find out if I can make a "simple" software change to get more out of my 991.1 without spending a lot of money to improve the existing stock suspension. (Looks like there isn't much to be gained via the SW.)

I can attest that my .1 C2 S and .1 C2 GTS have very different steering feel. the GTS has a lot more feel, weight both at low speeds, high speeds and cornering.Since both cars didn't have PSP, I have always assumed that the software was different as there are no mechanical differences (that I know of) between a 991.1 C2S and a 991.1 C2GTS

@desmotesta - Did both cars have (or not have) power steering plus optional software?
Both cars also had Sport-PASM yet the GTS is FAR more planted nears limit (street limits) and have noticeable more rear grip, less body roll. Go figure.

Sorry If I was unclear, both my previous 991.1S and current 991.1GTS did not have PSP. I have also driven a 991.2 Base, 991.2 T and a 991.2 GTS, and only the .2 GTS had the same steering feel like my .1 GTS. Porsche makes a LOT of fine tune changes between trims that I am willing to bet they do not divulge, and I believe those fine tune changes (software, wheel offsets and may be even PASM tuning) are the reasons so many trims feel so different.

Going further, the difference in steering feel between a GTS and a GT3/GTRS comes down largely to geometry and suspension setup.
tl;dr while there may be software differences the actual geometry and suspension setup are what account for most of the differences.

Sorry to revive an old thread but I found something while messing with PIWIS Engineering Mode that might interest 991.1 owners:
I was able to upload the EPS calibration file for the GT3 onto my 981 Cayman S. It made a bigger difference than I thought it would. I posted my impressions over on the 981 forum if anyone is interested:

Wow this is extremely interesting. I would love to give this a shot, wish I had access to PIWIS

In all seriousness, getting yourself a PIWIS set-up pays for itself very quickly if you do any work on your car at all.

Thank you for posting this, I have a VXDAS PIWIS 2, I need to figure out how to get to that menu. Is there a walk through somewhere on how to get there?
