Did you have a coolant leak/water pump replaced?
#316
looks to be a simple replacement but a shame that the entire coolant will probably need to be drained and bled again. That’s probably most of the 2 hours quoted.
Yes X51, this is what happened to my car too, at least the latest thing. I just picked up my car. I had it towed on Friday for coolant on the garage floor. I thought it was the pump again, but it this joint between the aluminum thermostat housing and a plastic water tube. The pressure will eventually create a leak. So now they have a new part to add on to make the joint stronger. This is meant to be done if you have the pump replaced under warranty, but mine was just out, so they didn't. See the photos of the before, and then in the red circle is the new part (9A1-106-338-00) and it's 3 new bolts (9A7-008-129-00). So hopefully my coolant issues are behind me, but I am still investigating the version D of the pump to see what's different about it.

This is interesting. I've been following this thread because I had a similar leak in my cooling system in a 2016 Cayman GTS with 19,500 miles. It didn't leak much and I could drive it for several hundred miles before the low coolant warning came on. Different configuration, I know, but my leak was from a fitting coming down from the thermostat. The car was 9 months out of warranty and me dealer indicated that I could not expect much if any help from Porsche on the repair. I was hoping to do the work myself but after putting it on my lift and seeing what all was involved, I decided to take it to a Porsche indy shop. They confirmed my diagnosis that it was a seal/O ring leaking and not the pump or thermostat. They replaced every seal in that area ($250 worth) and the pump "while there were in there" which I agreed was prudent. I've been considering whether I should call Porsche NA just to see if I could get some help on my repair. I documented everything I did to my car and of course the repair bill. BTW, it took 8 hours to get in there and replace everything, so it wasn't cheap, but probably half what the dealer would have charged.

Thanks, Arch7. Good info. Disappointing it's an issue on the 991.1 too.
Bill Mitchell - My gut (and experience) tells me if you had the dealership do the work, you might have a better shot with Porsche NA assisting in the cost, but using an Indy I suggest your chances of any assistance are lessened. Regardless, it doesn't cost anything but your time to try, so I'd give it a shot.

Of course the part has to be ordered, so I cannot drive the car until it is repaired. It didn't leak but a couple drips on the 10 mile drive to the dealership, but it was leaking a lot when I got it home after its diagnosis. SO, be aware of the bulletin and when you have your 991.2 in for service, have them check it for seepage or just have them replace it. Service manager told me it's a 2 hour task.

My Carrera T is 3 years old on 6th April 2021, so the (UK) Porsche warranty will expire then.
They just gave me a ball park quote of around £2,000, should my water pump fail.
They have also quoted me a similar figure for a 2 year extension to the warranty. Don’t think I’ll be eligible to buy the warranty extension though, due to various mods carried out by Litchfield Motors.
I have the car booked in for 12th March to swap the winter wheels/tyres for the summers, and to have the MOT done. I’ll ask them to carry out a VERY careful inspection of the water pump on that visit!

I just noticed the differences in the plastic pipe construction while watching a German review of a 2017 991 review on YouTube. Now I don't know it it was a recall during the year because the first image above is what they used on my 2015 991.1 and it leaks now and then, but not enough that I had to add coolant.
I grabbed this pic off YouTube. It has that same metal collar around the plastic end of that coolant pipe.

Hmm. the last thread was Jan of 21. It's now the end of May. I bought my 991.2 in April. "Coolant Pump 0PB121005C" was replaced on 2-4-21 (maybe purchased then) and Thermostat (9A712111000, gasket (0PB121688), Water Tube (0PB121512A) 2 Screw Plugs (99906303801) and 2 Seal Rings (PAF013814) were replaced on 3-5. Mileage was ~41K. He said there was a "small leak or seepage" and that's why it was replaced.
It was FINE until about May 10th. Then it overheated the 1st time. Scared me as this was my first 911 and I opened the radiator cap to let off steam, but fluid ran out. Not to bright, I am. Anyway it cooled off and I drove home about 20 minutes later. No issues. I "topped" off the tank thinking it might be the thermostat. Hoping it was. 3 days later it did it again. Now this is the ODD part...Once it get's over 194 it will not stop. I pull over, wait 1-2 minutes, start and drive again...it will stay at 194 for a few minutes (maybe seconds) then climb higher... I stop again, wait and repeat. By the 3rd-8th time it will STAY at 194 and all is good!
I took it to a shop and they "Burped" the system. Charged me $400 and the NEXT day it did it again. But I do the routine and it will be fine for 3 days (unless my wife is in the car then it will do it every time she's there).
I just found out about a service bulletin dated 2-13-18 #147/17
I'm out of warranty and wonder what the "valve block" will cost? Pump's already been replaced with the "C" verson and there are no leaks!
Still hoping it's just an "air pocket". But if they find fluid in the vacuum lines, then it's the valve block.

I think I will install the coolant pump from my Acura in my Porsche. It is just over 4 years old and not a single failure, but then it is an Acura..
I think Porsche invented coolant pumps last year and they haven't sorted all the issues with them. A...effing...mazing!
