Is there a limit on speed with the front end up? I'm pretty sure that I read in my manual that there is an upper speed at which you can't operate the FAL, but not an upper speed to drive with it up.

Usually, once you get going, it will automatically lower - not now, will exceed 30mph and nothing seems to happen.

By today's standards it's almost a lightweight. The roof line is actually lower than the 991.

Your wife has good taste.
The non-functional tail light was probably just the 928's well-known 'electrical gremlins.'

Actually, no, that's internet legend.

I always worry a little bit about folks that remember the 928 'cause Scarface.

And on that note, a prop for the next post.

Say hello to my little friend:

That -^ is the airguide from a 928. You can see the puddle of oil in it. What you can't see is that it's about 4 oz of oil and that the entire inner surface of the intake is wet with oil. This is on the 'business end' of the throttle plate. The 928s breather system, in stock form, breaths the crank case directly on the other side of the throttle plate.

So, yeah, 928s will eat oil. Quite a bit. It's not good for performance. Doesn't really hurt them. But, eventually, the carbon buildup on the piston tops gets to the point where you get misfires.

Well... we shall see. My impression from inhabiting this forum since 2014 is that the Turbos change hands frequently over their first years of life. We, on this thread, - and those of you that have been faithful to the sub-brand for decades and still have 996 and 997 Turbos much more so than I - probably represent a small subset of Turbo owners. Most folks probably 'moved on' by the time the left charge pipe got filled with oil.

However, as these cars find their forever homes, we'll begin to see more and more folks that DIY and we'll learn the common issues with them.

But, given that there are folks that have lived with these motors father's and grandfather's, I'd hope that observations are available from the 996s and 997s. Was oil ingestion an issue? Did the intact tracts get coated in oil?

Anyway...

Here's what the y-pipe side of mine looks like. It's condition is familiar looking ...

What I can't do is flip-open the throttle plate to see how much oil's settled on the business side of the plate.

My data set is N=1.

What have other folks seen?

@SamboTT@ByDesign is this more-or-less what you see when you get to the throttle plate? Or is this prima facie evidence that I need to bite the #$%^ing bullet and dig my way to the air/oil separator?

Or something else?

In the absence of more data, I'm going to clean everything up, put it back together, drive it a bit and then see what's in the left-side charge pipe. If it's still clean then I'll take it on my yearly pilgrimage to the Blue Ridge Mountains and then, when I get back, see how much oil's accumulated.

Yeah that’s pretty normal and you’ll notice it’s coming from the passenger side turbo charger from the separator. However, it’s kind of a self cleaning unit unless it really goes poop. It’s probably your oil level is too high. If it seems like it’s not all the way up or right at the top that’s probably only after it drank a bunch you know? I like to have the oil level right around the middle when it’s warm. Because when it gets really hot And you’re under high boost conditions it goes up. That’s when it starts consuming.

Say hello to my little friend...!

Pretty sure the 928 was replaced with a pile of coke in that scene.

Yup. See earlier post and picture.

Right-side output hose was a catch can. Probably almost a cup of oil.

Nope.

Running max oil level is a no-no.

I'm happy with one or two green bars on the "dip stick" and don't try for more. And, yeah, I've done my own oil changes.

My suspicion - maybe more of a hope - is that the oil level in the output hose is simply the accumulation that occurs "normally" over 20k-miles and that by keeping that hose "drained" the intake tract will be less oily.

When your intake tract looks like this, you got some serious blow(by) problems.

Yeah no matter what a little is still normal. This can be exaggerated however by a bad pressure hose on the passenger turbo discharge. Porsche had a bulletin on this you’ll notice if it was done that there’s an extra O-ring on that side. You can look for that. Also just clean them up and make sure they are in good condition. If it doesn’t sell up really well I can exaggerate the issue.

Running max oil level is a no-no.
I'm going to quote/repeat that again as it is really important and counter intuitive....

DO NOT top off your oil to the bar under the line. I've settled in to just adding a single quart between oil changes) if/when it reaches the min oil bar.

Yep, that's the scene, and most certainly, a congestive issue.
