And there you go. That's the proper cause of the problem.
You lived in the USA, where dealers can sell to out of state, so you are not limited to that one dealer. You have the whole country's dealers to call and try to source a car.
Not saying if you call around will actually get you a car, but if you don't put in the initial effort and call, you will never have a car. Sitting in front of the computer and whine about it will also not get you a car. There is no free lunch in this world, everything has to be earned.
Even the 918 owners also put in their efforts. Money doesn't grow on trees, they are earned, and all the owners earned enough to be able to afford a million dollar car, it's not a free lunch for them either.

Call me crazy but since we know it's a six speed I wouldn't mind the transmission be in a Dog Leg congiguration. Wiith the reverse being in the top left spot and first being right below. Porsche built this car for the track rats and truthfully how often will some one use first gear beyound getting the car moving? I'm thinking more of the twistie type roads or track courses where going between 2nd and 3rd gears and then 4th and 5th gears then have 6th on the top right. I figure that this would be a matter of personal taste and where one likes to drive the hidden roads or keep the car strictly for Track usage. If I could ever move to Nevada City California that would be ideal. There are so many great roads to discover there, twisties in and around the whole area.
Then I know of a common Magazine, cannot remember if it's Car & Driver or Road and Track or Motor Trend does their big testing and Comparos just North of Tehachapi CA.

I used to love cars with the dogleg 1st gear, but it's been a while. Has PORSCHE ever offered that? I only go back to an 88 911, so maybe before.
Edit: The also won't do it these days if just for the hit your 0-60 times take.

You guys really need to chill out. In 18 months time, the 991.2 GT3 will come up with an updated 4.0 engine and a manual gearbox. Nobody will even remember the 911R by then. In absolute performance terms, the new .2 GT3 will beat the R in every measurable performance matrix.
Personally for me, I think my R will compliment my RS perfectly, but I realize I may be in a very different situation than most here. Ideally, I am hoping I can get the same limitation number on the R as on my 918, which would be perfect!

This pattern continued with the type 911 gearbox in 1970-71, but in 1972 the type 915 trans. was introduced with the traditional pattern.

Here're more details from Automobile Magazine. Not sure if this has already been posted. Interesting tidbids: redline at 8600rpm, glass rear and side windows for US market.
