I now believe that Macca's source is probably right. Two people posted they got contacted for loaners a day or two before "the phone call". I'm still clinging to the hope that my car is good to go. My percentage estimate has now dropped from 25% to 5%, though.
I will hate the wait but a new engine is not a heart trasplant. F1 cars do it routinely. All race cars do it, none fail because of the new install. My mechanic told me it is easy. He also said that any proper conrod work, on the other hand, would be beyond any US mechanic's ability due to lack of training. My dealership, whcih services race cars, seem to always have some engine out of spec boxsters and spec 996. I am actually excited about a new engine, as we get to debate the break in period all over again.

Edit: The no creep function in the PDK-S is also more enjoyable.

I live in El DOrado Hills CA which is between San Fran and Tahoe Its a Small town. We do have nice roads around here and HWY 50 to Tahoe is priceless when its not snowing and Salmon fall road where I live has some nice twisty turns for like 10 miles and it continues on to HWY 49 (Gold rush area) and on. I specifically built my house here for the twisty road of Salmon Fall Road so that I can enjoy my bike and cars and family of course loves it here. You all need to come down for some beer and cigars and we can laugh about all this GT3 stuff. Cheers

Mike, I was beginning to think you were an under cover Porsche agent. Now I understand the reason for your persistent optimism. :thumb up:
All of us in accepting this car with a new engine are risking lengthy service issues and possible future failures. Porsche just does not have the time to adequately do this right despite what many of you think. Their hands are tied.

Back OT, let's not get confused by the word "new". The engine will be new in the sense that it's unused with an updated and improved part, not new as in new design. As has been mentioned several times, the design has already proven itself in hundreds of thousands of hours of testing. No manufacturer, Porsche included, would put an untested design in the cars as an expediency and risk a fiasco like this a second time.
As has also been mentioned, if improperly spec'd or defective bottom end components found their way into these engines, and if Porsche can't determine at exactly which point in the supply chain that the bad parts started to appear, then a total engine replacement is the best solution for all customers and likely for Porsche as well, although it will cost them a fortune. Call me an optimist if you like; I can live with that.
At last, a silver lining!

Hydrostatic transmissions have their place as do gear drive types. Depends on what you're using it for.
The late Turbo cars have always run better with an automatic (all they way back to the Tiptronic). They are blistering fast. "***** to the wall" and hold on.
