All testing to date has been done on OEM wheels. In testing on the three standard GT3 wheel colors there has been zero transfer to the white polymer barrel of the tool.
Keep in mind that the factory uses a nearly identical process for mounting wheels, and it has been confirmed by a Rennlister that this process is used on the factory magnesiums as well.
This weekend I will be testing on FI-Rs and Magnesiums and will report findings. The tool should work fine on any wheel with factory quality surface treatment like OEMs, BBS, Forgeline, etc.
Can someone explain the benefits over the Armstrong multiplier? Can this tool be recalibrated?
Also, I've always been told one should never use a multiplier or torque wrench to loosen anything of high torque value. Thoughts?
Looks pretty Kool,
The torque multiplier section of the tool can be re-certified at any time by shipping to the manufacturer.
The tool works seamlessly in either direction (CW or CCW), and has a maximum torque rating of 1000 Nm (737 lb*ft) and can safely be used in either direction up to this torque level. The 737 lb*ft rating has been more than enough to take off any of the wheels I've used it on. The multiplier has an internal shear pin that will save the unit of someone tries to apply more than 737 lb*ft.
If I do encounter a flat I need to be able to remove the wheel. This tool makes things alot easier breaking 400 plus tq is no joke using a long tq wrench or breaker bar. This is why I spent the money
The tool arrived today in a nice sturdy carry case. It had detail instructions on how to operate the tool for removing and installing the lock nut w pics of the tq tools needed w the tq spec you will use. That is very helpful to us all. The tool itself is very sturdy and well built so I'm sure it will do a good easy job. The gear mech looks strong also. Unfortunately I wont be able to test it as I have to fly out to Israel for 1.5 months for work tomorrow, but hopefully another member can test it out for us. As a added bonus since I'm a kwell dude, if anyone in Houston needs to use it when I return to town they are more than welcome.
How many others bought this tool? I'm sure I'm not the only one from what was supposed to be the match number to get the ball rolling for production. Version 1 and Version 2. Members chime in.
The original version of tool (Version 1), which launched a few months ago, was intended for use exclusively on stock 10 spoke GT3/GT3 RS aluminum wheels.
Once the group buy got rolling it quickly became clear that most of the interested buyers needed a tool that would work on a number of different wheels including stock 10 spoke GT3/GT3 RS, Turbo S/GTS, BBS FI-R, BBS Magnesium, WP Magnesium, Forgeline GS1R, HRE P101, and other similar 5, 6, 7 "Y" spoke design wheels.
To accommodate these requests we went back to the drawing board and created a new version of the tool, which we call Version 2, which has since been prototyped and tested on a number of different wheels.
A limited number of group buy participants went with Version 1 of the tool, and those were shipped out early last week. The Version 1 buyers got the benefit of getting their tools first. A large majority of the group buy participants decided to go with Version 2 for the added versatility it provides if you currently have multiple wheel sets or expect to buy them in the future. Version 2 uses a smaller polymer barrel, and a different reaction arm length which allows for use with a much greater variety of wheels. In the pic below Version 1 is on the left and Version 2 is on the right.
Testing of Version 2 was completed recently on OEM ten spokes, BBS Mags, and BBS FI-Rs, and production of those tools for the group buy participants will start next week. If you have any questions on fitment with the Version 2 of the tool just let me know.
