Do you have a real job?

No GT3 yet (currently trying to purchase one), but this thread caught my eye because of the title. The first thing my father said to me when I started my company back in high school was "Why don't you get a real job? You could sell hot dogs at the baseball stadium like your step brother." I always look back and think to myself, ignoring his advice was the best decision I ever made.

My job is no where near as lucrative as some ..or most hear from reading this thread....but with my abusive parents during childhood and limited education in college I’m happy to be where I am at and to actually own a GT3. A good wife of 30 years and no kids honestly has been a huge help.
Since I am in sales and am a very organized, loyal, and self starter type of worker I must admit I often think about what other industry I could be in doing practically the same job or close to it and make double or triple the money.
Anyway my job is definitely interesting as I am a sales rep and product specialist in the music instrument industry. I’m a independent contractor to these companies and not bound to a office desk. I live in hotels and I am out seeing customers about ever week or so. I'm 53 and have been a sales rep now for 23 years...all self employment

There have also been times at my life when I've been "hungry" and couldn't do the things that I wanted to do. When I was hungry I worked harder and took more risks / steps than I do now. I've gotten somewhat comfortable or complacent and I've stopped short of where some of the big earners have. If i had more ambition maybe my life would be more extravagant, but I'm not sure that would make me happier. This is my first season with a GT3, and I find myself a little uncomfortable at autocrosses because people assume that I'm a wealthy person. I feel automatically less approachable, and I find when they mention something about old 911s, I have to stop short of saying "I have an aircooled car too"
For me, I'm a 35 year old automotive engineer, with no wife, no alimony, no kids, and a very modest life.......outside of my GT3 and aircooled hot rod.

Ironically, I've been busier over the past 6 months than I have in years. But while I personally remain very busy, the pandemic economy is starting to impact my company and many of my employees aren't busy enough.
While I take the pandemic seriously and I recognize that the coronavirus is much worse than a typical flu virus, it puts things in perspective to see that less than 1/1,000 Americans have died from this virus (the vast majority of them elderly and suffering from comorbidities) yet we have a huge impact to our psycho-socio-economic lives due to the way we've handled the pandemic.

34, primary care doc
Some days are kinda busy. Others are so slow I exhaust 3 different forums. Im on the clock 35 hours a week.
I don't really enjoy the job. Kinda burnt out. So it's nice to hear from others in the field who got out and are successful. But right now the work to pay ratio is too good and it funds my car habit.

They might already know more about us than we know about ourselves!
So, I know we've all worked hard, have some skills, etc., but how much do you all attribute your good position in life to luck? In my case, I do feel that I've been pretty lucky, with a big part of that luck simply being in the US.

I’m 42. No inherited money here. I own my own business and built it with my family for years. For many of those years I didn’t have much, but worked hard, long hours, and have helped build our business into one of the most successful in our industry. I still work hard every day (I love my job and what I do), but have also gotten to the point where I can take a little time here and there to enjoy other hobbies as well.

Choose something you love to do, and never work a day in your life.
