update; got my 993 Xenons back from the car electronics guy recently;

effin' amazing's all i can say. cost comparison:

buy the factory Xenon Litronic lamps at the dealer (includes the bulbs and igniters) = $5,600

add on the ballasts and wiring harness' @ $1,400 >> = ~ $7,000 (total)

instead i found a pair of Xenon's on ebay from a guy who did a huge group buy for the 993 guys wishing to change over to the Xenons and he ended up with some overstock. no porsche ballasts, no porsche wiring harness... but the lampsets arrived at my house for $1,500 plus $40 shipping.

i was going to capitulate on getting the stock wiring harness and the ballasts until about a few moments later it dawns on my that if i want to run 6,000 k 35w lamps, i'll need a kit and then the Porsche wiring harnesses and ballasts aren't needed WIN !!!

so i brought the lamps in and told him i wanted the 6,000 k Phillips bulbs and call me when they're ready. he retofitted a complete kit and sealed up the new wiring harness;

6,000 k/35W are 100 % street legal,

total for new genuine Bosch fixtures add Phillips 6,000 k lamps; $1,886.

leftovers; original bulbs and igniters.

now i got to hybridize the 968 fenders w/ the 993 fenders i picked up recently.

that ought to be fun.

I don't know anything about Shaolin anything, but Shuri-ryu is heavily influenced by Chinese kung-fu...

Either way, the bixenon headlight project is on indefinite hold...but not forgotten! I've still got it bouncing around in the back of my head, and I revisit it every now and again. I'll work it out sooner or later.

Default cleaned up version.....

the word 'rare' is often used to describe a certain number of 968s on many of the threads on this forum... frankly, in the front engine 4, P-car world vs the real world, i'm suspicious.... just what exactly does 'rare' entail ? and if a car is rare how does that compare to other, so-called rare or collectable '80s and '90s cars of the post muscle-car era ?

i take a hard line about any rumours of advancing interest (from the public) that could someday send our car's values upward... so, i'm wondering,

is there really any evidence that this will someday occur ?

Jeff is doing is a fantastic job keeping the breed and i appreciate the database he maintains. yet, i don't think Porsche could give two ****s about any of these cars. i've never seen a 968 shown in any contemporary, officially sanctioned Porsche exhibit or retro event... ever. before i get into the 968's collectability, i want to give a brief mention about the '80s cars...

real '80s collectable cars are few and far between. are there any truly collectable '80s Audi's out there ? no. BMW's ? maybe a few M cars, and that's even pushing it. Benz ? maybe the odd AMG somethingorother..... how 'bout the Rothman's 944s or any 911's ? yawn on the fugly, '80s Porsche bugs, and the Rothman's car seems as they say, obscure.... how 'bout the Ferrari 308/328 adventure ? well, they cost 3 times as much to service as they're worth, and performance really isn't very good. Testarossa? dunno.... Ferrari GTO ? ok, we have a winner !!.... Lamborghini Cou—caught myself. others ? .... how 'bout the late-'80's Astons and Lotus'..... pass; the old Vantage Zagatos were some of the fugliest so-called exotics ever, and no clue about who might wish to collect them.... and no crowds lining up for Esprits either.... ok -- the 959 and F-40; saved; American cars ? BGN ? ummm maybe; my '80s picks; 1. Ferrari F-40. 2. Porsche 959. 3. Ferrari GTO.... 4). Ferrari Testarossa. 5). Ferrari 308/328. 6). the Porsche 944 Turbo S (third best if judging on the basis of performance alone). and way, way back there, honorable mention goes to the Lotus Esprit T.....

with the booming economy of the Reagan-era in full swing, and sales looking pretty good, most of the '90s platforms were sitting on the drawing board, and an excited group of executives to go along.... i can't imagine the disappointment they must have been feeling just a few years later, after the '91 recession hit.... despite the accolades given to the Carrera 4, the early '90s didn't turn out to be so great considering the investments and innovations that had been made....

but the expanding era of the post-muscle-car-era exotics (having begun with the 288 GTO, F-40 and 959), was by now, in full swing... and the list is far too long to really get into.... my favorite '90s cars are (the Ford GT, McLaren F1, Ferrari 355 and 360).... in the P-car world, we had the 968 and 993 updates, to go along with an newish (sort of), flagship, 928GTS...

the 968 is somewhat of a parody. one thing; is the 968 really a '90s car ? it has leftover 944 styling mixed with some forward nine-five-nine and variocam... but, scant on other '90s tech updates...

so then; does the 968, 928 GTS or (993) end up taking up any space in the mindset of the enthusiast sports car collecting public out there ? well, despite high production, it turns out the purchase of a 993 was to become one of the best Porsche investments ever... it has barely lost any value since it arrived 18 years ago.... cars with very low miles command prices just below sticker. or even better for the coup de grâce of all the super, air/oil cooled 911s — that of course being the 1997 Turbo S (of which only something like 185 were made).

you can't say anything even remotely like this about the 968 or final edition of the 928.

there are scant collectable 968s... (and skipping right over all the Sports and CS cars), there are about 18 or 20 in all..... people have attempted reproductions, but the Porsche (968TS) parts cupboard is now bare..... i think Raj's car represents the truest form of enthusiast mod of any P-car i have ever seen or heard about, ever. surely, tops anything from the entire 20 year production run of front engine, 4 cylinder Porsches.... and technically, doesn't fall one fibre short of a production 968 TS or RS... in real street performance, it destroys all '80s-era prodution 911s, and with a top speed pushing 190 mph (seriously), and if we're talking about the late '80s/early '90s, with it's superior handling, Raj's Turbo S stands side by side with the two best air/oil-cooled 911s ever; the 959, and 1997 993 Turbo S.

yet it's odd — that most people have never heard of a Porsche 968 Turbo S or Turbo RS.

for the rest of us, things are considerably less spectacular..... show me 1 collectable 911 or flagship Porsche from the '80s or '90s besides the 993 and 959 that matters. things get measurably worse for 968s; in my opinion, neither the 968 CS or Sport holds any significance whatsoever in terms of collectability with the automotive buying public at large, and i have no inclination to think they ever will.... the truth, is that nobody in the automotive world (including Porsche) gives a crap about our cars.... in the end, it's a love fest in the lowly 944/968 neighborhood, with a few other P-car owners occasionally peeking in—but no more.... so pardon me, for being curt; there's no reason to get too caught up... if you're interested in getting one, buy any 968 that's been well cared for....

if you like the way the car comes from the factory bone stock or with a few options, you're driving a car that's a considerable improvement over what came before — a P-car that can be driven daily, yet won't break the bank on upkeep and repairs.... (i've made over 50 1,000 mile ++ trips over a span of 80 k miles since buying my well-cared for '68 with 77 k miles 3 and a half years ago.... all with just regular scheduled maintenance and 1 failing starter motor and original high-pressure ps line as unscheduled parts failures).....

i happen to be a firm believer that in the Porsche world, average doesn't cut it. life is short... so, there's little to be gained by keeping a non-collectable car stock, especially, if it reduces the driving experience. in the 911 world, we have RUF for that very reason.... i've got a few bones about the 968 (that i find generally offensive); a few items that we might just as soon discard (but, keep in mind, you always have the option removing the [cheap quality] items and placing them in storage)...

1). lose the cheap, fugly steering wheel and install either a 968 Clubsport or 996 3-point airbag wheel. 2). maybe dump the heavy, over-rated gimmicky mechanical seats for genuine Porsche sports seats 3). next, rip out the rear seats for a nice D-9 CS replica cover. 4). as you all know, i'm not a fan of the tame, heavy production exhaust (the resonator is severely constricted).... we can reduce the weight, and improve the sound and performance of the car with an upgrade... 5). consider updating to wider wheels and tires and keep your original cups pristine... 6). proper Porsches (and other real sports cars) come with huge brakes. go bigger. 7). next, an improved, or bi-amped stereo system....

finally, 8). tint for the windows and rear hatch glass (will help to reduce UV damage to the interior pieces)....

i don't see a huge gain with running the M030 for the street escept in increasing the number of backaches... but, i love the idea of adding LSD, or Turbo RS wing.... then driving and keeping things up until the engine is dead... and hopefully one day, you can install a more powerful engine and even update the transmission... sorry for more steppin' on toes, etc.... thanks for reading.

i hereby present the odurandina exhaust....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU6FN...ature=youtu.be

for best results, use a good pair of headphones or a good sound system with plenty of gain and decent subwoofer to hear the full volume range between idle and wide open throttle.

now i gotta go do a top speed run with the recorder on.

enjoy.

let alone the general public..... nifty feats of engineering that they are, telling the truth can get you killed here... but, i'm not sentimental. in the afterworld, we have turbo, supercharger and V8 conversion specialists — who've been proving the 944 and 968 tubs to be some of the best kit car cores — ever. and as sad as it is to admit, there isn't a shed of evidence the cars will ever ever be collectables.

Thanks for the sound clips. They went a long way in helping me choose which way to go for my S2. In the end I made a few compromises, but am happy with the results. 100 cell metal core cat, 14" long chambered resonator, an 18" long muffler and a 4" angled oval tip. All the pipes are 2.5" mandrel bent and a mig welder was used to piece it all together. It's definitely louder than stock, but doesn't have any drone on the highway and sounds good under load. Not exactly a copy of your setup but following the same basic principles ended up with good results. No sound clips yet, but when I do I'll post up a link. Thanks.

Everything needed for a basic swap minus the oil-pan (I suggest getting TPC's) as This kit uses TPC's AC-compatible POWDER-COATED uprights and allows maximum steering rack clearance. The X-member is precision line-bored at the control arms for exact 3/4" drop, relieved at the rack mounts (for max oil-pan clearance) and slotted at the Upright mounts for aft movement. It was then acid washed, primered, and painted . Again, I guarantee your hood will close (with no cutting) even with the taller power steering rack. 3/4" billet X-member spacers and 3/4" longer X-member zinc-plated bolts and washers. 3/4" Sway bar spacers. 3/4" bump-steer tie-rod drop blocks (You will need to get a set of MANUAL rack outer tie-rods...Rock Auto $25/ea). Bolt-on Modded 13/16" Wilwood MC and custom adjustable pushrod adapter (Includes Wilwood accessories). 30" -4an stainless braided line and Wilwood NPT adapter. Brand New Anodized and Pre-Modded C5 throwout bearing with -4an lines included to fit the C5 Bellhousing adapter with TT mounting hardware all included. Your chioice of an LS or LT/SBC pilot bearing adapter and new pilot bearing. I redesigned the 1/4" thick 2000 series alloy brake MC adapter for factory 944 MC and a longer custom adjustable pushrod adapter. It has a seperate billet plate that removes so the larger firewall plate can be re-used for Hydroboost or Dual MC mount later. Kit comes with New construction 4140 custom steering shaft with brand new Borgeson U-joints made for the 3/4" X-member drop. It is adjustable due to the Double D ends. Comes lengthened exactly 1/2" but can be extended or shortened by end-user.....Also included is my new universal billet-polyurethane transmission mount (85.5-up only) that set the drivetrain at factory position or 1/2" back for the V8 swap with swappable set-screws..... And to sweeten the pot, I'm adding in one of my Short Shifters, all Chromoly design with Teflon Heim....

decided to re-post an explanation of my exhaust adventures from a couple of months ago....

i like the idea of aftermarket exhausts and stainless steel pipe, but i am yet to hear anything good... what i have heard are some pretty crappy setups on the interwebs, and of course in real life. moreover these kits are expensive. they usually have one really nice part; (the s-pipe). but any good exhaust man can handle this part of the job.

letting loose a truly exotic 4 cylinder engine....

sorry about another self-serving post about my exhaust but, here it is;

no more taint, stock sound... no more mad, loud lawnmower sound. no turbo whine (which of course, isn't a bad thing)... no more just plain too loud anymore, at least not until you really step on it... NO RICER GAGBURBLE like ALL the aftermarket exhausts; if you had a Ferrari 360 for a week, you'd be given to the temptation of reving the f_ck out of it everywhere you go -----

well, it happened to me !! i love my car ! i admit it. i'm a full on JUNKIE !!...... i tried doing straight pipes (cat is long gone) with the Hooker glasspack, but the first inclination was a bit too loud and too rough... i had originally bought this nice resonator but never bothered to add it with the original test pipe... if you're planning on doing something with your exhaust anytime soon, build this ! so wtf happened ? --- by adding just the odd MUSTANG resonator (not a glasspack, but just a hollow tube chamber that opens from 2 1/2" to 4" and back to 2 1/2") -- well, this thing made a huge difference....

it's makes a low, "throaty" sound at idle, similar to a big V6, but when you get on the throttle it begins to turn a deeper "roar," and finally, at full throttle, it sounds like no 4 cylinder engine you've never heard before... not quite like running straight pipes, nor a V6, nor V8.... but really good for a 4 cylinder. i've searched the webs for any combination that can make a sound like this and nothing even comes close....

somewhere along the way, somebody convinced us all to accept what isn't so.

the variocam is a huge 4 cylinder engine that breathes very large volumes of air by 4 cylinder engine standards....

so why do none of the exhuasts on youtube allow the 3.0 litre engine to sound like a 3.0 litre engine ?

furthermore, all the 968 catback systems desperately need resonators. watch the videos. they sound a bit less 'ricey' than Honda's but they all still sound like crapola.... if you're running an old cat (or any cat), stock or aftermarket exhaust, they all sound basically the same; like pee-shooter fart cans with about 2 point nuthin' litres of displacement. why ? i believe it's mostly due to the fact that once the variocam kicks on, you've got a mild race engine. and at that point there's no benefit to having a catalytic converter in the circuit.

but, stand next to this car at idle, and give it a little throttle.... it sounds more like 4.0 litres. rev it up to 4,500 and then let off the gas and it makes a fat, low-frequency crackle... then rev it toward the limiter. heaven.

1st good exhaust;

i tried several combinations before finally combining a Hooker Maxflow glasspack with an SLP loudmouth hollow chamber resonator... about a year later, i killed that muffler when i tried to drive across some dirt going too fast and bottomed out (long story)... it was too loud anyway -- so i changed to a very large 22"X11"X5" Magnaflow glasspack with one mild 'S' bend inside just before leaving Florida last spring.

had a beautiful pipe made up to accommodate the larger muffler..... the key is the resonator' an SLP 2.5"/4"/2.5" X 18" which gives the engine a really throaty sound at low rpms and it changes to a more and more exotic sound at higher rpms. the setup is completely open but the larger muffler has removed 75 % of the loudness factor and left just a right amount behind. still, the sound when you let off the gas is sick. i promise none of the cat back systems sound anything like this..... the resonator is located just behind where the cat used to be.... some of the other hollow resonators have partial cutouts inside. but this is completly hollow with no internal parts whatsoever. the muffler is extremely large (12589), and barely almost doesn't fit.

Carl (928 forums) drove it last summer.

this experience has taught me something about what a normally aspirated 4 cylinder can do as far as the exhaust note. but, the four cylinder architecture is the limiting factor... in the end, flat 6's w/ turbos, v8's, v10's and v12's all sound better... but this combo makes way better sound than other exhausts, and costs much less to put on the car. i would recommend my setup starting with at least an 18" X 9" Magnaflow stainless steel glasspack... and don't forget to run a heavy guage pipe and use all three mounting points.

i'll re-post pics of the exhaust parts in a couple hours.

hey,

Porsche is a very silly automobile maker.

get a CGT in a fender bender, and you have to total the car.

at least you can fix a Ferrari (sort of).

This is a 3 l Turbo conversion. The car has a tow bar mounted. On the way to a get-together, the black CS behind him is my one ...
