Step 24. Engage the handbrake. Remove the drive shafts. Be very careful to make sure the head of the Allen key is fully inserted. Undo the 2 or 3 you can see then disengage the handbrake, rotate the driveshaft to bring new bolts into play. Re engage the handbrake. Repeat until all are removed. Tie the driveshafts up against the coil springs. They must be clear of the transmission

Step 28. Disconnect the oil line in the right rear wheel well. It’s just held by a clamp and slides out with little oil loss. Bag the end and tie it out of the way.

Step 29. RHD C4. The clutch line on a RHD C4 loops under the transmission. You can’t drop the engine and transmission with it in the way. Here is how I sort it.

1. Clamp the clutch line at the reservoir (tip from Spokes).

2. Undo the fitting just before the loop. You can either let the fluid drain or as in my case have a prepped plug.

Later on, when you remove the cross support, the line can swing out of the way because you have already disconnected the slave cylinder.

Step 30. Drain the Power Steering reservoir contents into a container (about 1 cup of fluid). I used plastic hose and siphoned it. Disconnect the two lines and have the area prepped with rags as it will make a mess. Seal the lines.

Step 31. Use two 19mm spanners to disconnect the fuel filter line. It will leak fuel so be ready. Seal the line.

Step 32. Place the ATV jack under the engine. Lower the car onto the jack. Place a jack under the transmission and remove the transmission cross support and (C4) bottom bolts that hold the torque tube to the transmission.

Step 33. Remove the lower cover from the catalytic converter (gives better access to the engine mount nut). Make absolutely sure the jack is holding the engine then remove the two engine mount nuts from underneath the car. In my case they were 19mm nuts and I needed a deep socket.

Step 34. If you are certain everything is disconnected, then the engine and transmission are sitting on the jacks. Raise the car about 5cm. Disconnect the three hoses on top of the engine and the plug that goes to the afm.

Step 35. Raise the car another 5cm and check that nothing is snagged and the transmission is releasing

Step 36. In my case, the right hand drive shaft was not going to clear the starter motor. I’m not sure what I did wrong so I adapted and removed the starter motor. It only has two Allen nuts holding it on.

Step 37. Continue to raise the car in 5cm increments and check there is nothing snagging.

Adrian Streather’s book was a huge help.

Step 39. Feed the cats. Go to bed. Get growled at for grease on the bed, and wake up to the fruits of your labour.
