After doing so much work to clean up the front of the tub I decided to pull the bumper and remove the PPF.
Now, to be fair, this was not put on right after the respray in 2015. It was done in 2018, when the car had a few stone chips. They did it for free because they wanted to cut shapes for future 964 owners.
It protected the front from too much more damage but the lower bumper was unprotected and looks like it has seen a lot of stones.
I used steam to soften the adhesive but the paint still lifted in places. I’m not a fan.
With the PPF off, I could see some cracks I assumed were PPF joins were actually cracks. This bumper needs fixing and a respray. This got me thinking about installing fog lights.
Anyone who has faced cracked fogs knows they are $$$. That’s possibly why brake ducts are a popular mod, even if they don’t actually work.
When I bought the car in 2013, it had Techart combined fog/ducts. Unfortunately one of the units was cracked and they were no longer available so I put in normal brake ducts. However they were never vented to the brakes so they were for show.
In line with my move towards originality, I’m going to fit fogs. First up is re-establishing the bumper section to bolt the fogs to.
Another problem is that the connector fittings for the fogs are missing. I noted they are the same as the indicators, which are VW parts. I plugged the numbers into a site and they are available.
Luckily the two best of my four fog lights are a left and a right set. I don’t think I need to replace the lenses. It also appears relatively easy to fix the damage from cutting the bumper for the brake ducts. I just need to provide a fixing point for one side of each light base. A simple strap over the bolting point should be enough.
I am ordering new trim. Apart from the bumper respray this might be a cheap fix.

This is my big concern about removing the wrap from my car - it was put on just a few weeks after the car had been repainted and has been on the car for about 4 years...

I would definitely have a professional remove it. I imagine they would condition their work on an “all care no responsibility” basis.
I wasn’t aware there was a LED option. I will look at it.
These H3 LED bulbs are sitting on my workbench waiting to install this weekend. These are the only LED H3 bulbs I’ve found so far that look to fit. More of a cosmetic thing than anything else I think.

Spokes messaged me with the following
H3 LEDs Fog lights - modify to DRLs. Pull Relay#31 short 3 & 5. On/off with ignition.
These are on Alibaba. I will check dimensions in the unit.

Interesting that’s good to know I might try that out and see how it looks as DRLs. Thanks for the info! I’ll let you know how the ones I have go in. They look like they should fit nicely
