So let's see what tomorrow brings...
In the meantime...I'm now living with enso/joes/now BMikes new/old C4 full time while I do this work. And I can say this...all you guys that didn't buy that car missed out on a very good car that needs little to make it outstanding...I'm loving it. Can't wait to sort that out for real. It's going under the knife after mine and then Darren's...

993 coil boots arrived today. Now I just need the coils and I can do the dbfd Spartan bracket gizamaherm and make the non-performance but nice to have 993 coil swap for no reason other than to alleviate a potential non disastrous worry about the dreaded Xmas tree effect that so few but then so many also might have coming sometime in their futures as well....
You know...if we pooled all the money all of us would spend doing this rediculous mod...we could send s quality control committee to Brazil to the Bosch factory and school them in quality control, and still have money left over for dinner. There is zero reason why these coils should fail the way they do. And like many who will do this, mine are fine. And could be for years to come. And when they go, I won't be stranded. I'll be annoyed. And for the avoidance of the annoying, I'm going to spend and modify. Ugh.
And so we move on... Dust/rain boots...

That's what I am referring to. We made that with a bit of metal from Home Depot and a hammer on my bench vise. Dave made a cardboard mock up first. Took all of ten minutes to get it right...follow his lead... He did a great job making it look pretty much like it was meant to be that way from the factory...
Jason- cost is basically the coils, boots, and wires...not a ton. But not too cheep. 200ish?

A lot happened today for my car...lots of progress being made...
However, I will digress for a moment and give you a slice of what's coming...since Darren finally has a seat in the car...

Wheel bearings and spring plate bushings were done today. I hope this thread is helping you realize these cars are easy to work on. All of this stuff is pretty simple, and it's a matter of actually reading the shop manual...and owning a torque wrench and a few basic tools...so dive in...or I can add you to my tuition roster at the unofficial dbfd university...
Anyway, some pics for the day:

and now for a bit of general commentary about spring plate bushings, and your typical "Porsche tech"...at the shop.
I can't tell you how many times I've seen on Facebook, or have been told "the shop told me my spring plate bushings need to be replaced", and then subsequently to hear that they bought either oem Porsche plates, which is truely a waste of money, or some other very expensive spring plate or expensive bushing from elephant.
Don't get me wrong, I like the elephant bushings a lot, and I have used them on each of the cars here...but...
And this is the big but...
Not one of them really had to be replaced. There were a couple that were loose. But nothing so terrible that I would have suggested going through all the expense just to change those plates/bushings.
There is a performance benefit to making the change, and I'm happy with that. But...since all these cars have been beaten on and driven and all but Darren's are very high miles...I'm just going to reiterate...
The likelihood of your spring plate bushings needing to be replaced, is very very small.
This is what your tech at the shop sees:
And because he, like all techs at most shops, has never touched a 964 spring plate, he tells you they need to be replaced, when your actual issue is elsewhere - more than likely. If that bushing is not making clanging noises, it's not dead. So don't let the inexperienced tech hack at the shop who knows 997 and 981 like the back of his hand, tell you to spend money on your 964- when he has only ever done an oil change on the two 964 he has ever seen...(exaggeration for effect)...and remember that our spring plates were only used on the 964. So not many have ever looked at them.
They look nasty. All that is, is a torn rubber boot. And there is grease and dirt in there. 99% of all 964 have ugly looking but non failed spring plate bushings. Change them for performance (less weissach effect) or change them if they fail...but don't change them just because someone sees a dirty failed dust boot.
And always if you are going to have them replaced, and they are going to toss them...send them to me instead of throwing them away. I'll rehab them and use them on another guys car w new bushings...

What do you do about alignment when all the suspension work is finished? Take it to a local shop or DIY.
Love the thread by the way this kind of information sharing is what make Porsche ownership and the internet great.

I've used other shops around here, so if anyone needs recommendations in the ff county area, feel free to pm me. I have developed opinions on all of them. (So I hope they were either nice to me or did good work, lol)....
That said, Butzi is by far, the most fair, takes more time and pays more attention and gives more of himself to his customers...so he has my nod...don't forget to look for the article on him in 911 and Porsche world mag...
Anyway. If I had a set of hub stands and a string set, and camber gauge, I'd likely just do it myself...maybe someday I'll bite the bullet and buy them...I should buy a camber gauge...
