looks downright industrial Frank - like it!
Interesting topic re pedal assemblies - will read up more as it could be quite a neat mod longer term...
tilton etc..
When I got the car I thought I'd always hate the floor mounted pedals coming from the 996
... 22min later I forgot about it (and everyone who warned me about that 'problem') forever
Also I will share my view on H&T and pedal extentions etc...
I've never found it necessary to adjust a thing pedal wise re H&T... but I practiced for a while before deciding that ..
The key thing is you don't really need to H&T unless you're really going 90%+ and thus braking hard
and thus getting the brake far further back than most road driving necessitates..
so its harder to H&T on the road (unless you're really spirited!) ... but get on a track even in a P model you've never even driven
and I'm pretty sure you'll find it's easy to H&T when you:
1. stand on the brakes cos you need to
2. and then just swing your ankle out and blip - don't think .. just do about anything off to the right of your brake pedal
whether heel or toe or side of shoe etc..
- it's all in the right place ...
made me smile to realise - once again - the P engineers didn't let us down .. despite lots of tittilating threads 'telling' me
to get the extentions etc... Just my own experience, but working on the pedal made me remember this.
Also I should add that braking well - ie hard - while H&Tíng is not easy and many people who H&T well sacrifice
some of their 'threshold' on very hard braking corners ...
maybe something I shd raise on Kai's thread on 964 track technique.
NEWay .. back to the development journal ...
Decided to do the blue ... wait for carpets to review the black v ali decision
although I'm liking the brushed & ali contrast already with what I imagine a black carpet will look like.
But there's still something stealthy and solid about the anodised black.
Got to use my new (Happy Xmas!) Stanley rivet gun - 2s per rivet - sweet!
Also gave the backboard and orphan foot rest a coat of black while in there..
looks better .. don't see any reason to carpet that piece either.
Obligatory post assembly test drive - much grippier pedals - glad to have them back .. looks good IISSMS
.. coming together .. thanks for your comments guys

so after a week of what can only be described as real hard work ...
the engine is spotless, dripless and back in, running smooth.
I'll post more on what I learnt .. but it was alot. Reading is one thing ... doing, well, that's hard work first time out!
Best part is getting to know alot more of the nuts and bolts .. and finding some questions, like ...why the R at the end of this part number on the crankcase?
964.101.111.0R - google gives nada (with spaces, - or . )
and here's a pick of the engine nice and clean after running for 30 min
all new fixings - I think it was 24 nuts and washers in all - stainless this time
and getting ready to head home!

Really Nice Work!!
The only thing about all that beautiful work is the inability to see it more often. You did a 1st class job, and you are ever so right, you learn so much by doing it yourself. A big thumbs up to you!!

Top work. Quick turnaround too. Cup 1s definitely look good. It's like 964s just need 17" Cup 1s or 18" Speedlines. You can't miss with either of those two wheels on a 964.

thanks all for the support and encouraging words - I'll post on the process and what I learnt, used, took away
Thanks T2S ... I was under the car with a flashlight last night surveying the 'gleam' ...
next time will have to try the Vandit strip and powder coat approach so its more 'visible' - like the idea of:
1. fan needs to be a color
2. fan housing shd not be covered up - rather re-run the ignition leads and have it shine
3. coating the engine tin - but keep it black -- just rust proofed for ever
4. silver RennLine valve covers are on the water as we 'speak'
No question .. they're being negotiated this weekend - OEM too with J & Offset stamped either side of the valves - just a few nicks that need tending too but off a 2wd 964 Turbo
bud
Hattip to the 964 DIYs, you, Boxsey, Frank, Jetta, Rob, Rocket, Cup, Indycam and many others who drop pearls for the inexperienced everytime you post
- saved me lots of stress and helped avoid some big mistakes!
And just saved me time having to work out things that Adrian's book just almost shows .. turn page ... but doesn't.
Not that I didn't still:
1. break slave hard-line on the drop - too busy filming 'the moment' LoL
2. after a solid hour of pressure washing noticed that I'd spilled water into one of the intakes - will post on the vacuum removal technique
3. drop clutch shaft bearings everywhere after cleaning them and then spend 45m searching for those last 2 pins ... luckily had a new one ordered
4. lose 1 of 7 folders with step by step pics record/list of what I'd done for one day - resulting in a bit of guess work on the way back in
5. 3 cuts from sharp bits and ran out of gloves so hands look grungier than a lifer
etc...
Gladly didn't strip one bolt or drop anything into the engine!
Also got rid of about 2kg of muck and previous overfills, 5kg of aircon brackets & other leftovers, lots of corroding fixings
and found a plug for the mystery cowling hole on the 4-5-6 bank.
Turnaround in 10 days - well that's thanks to a (usually) very understanding wife who had to go away with the little one for 5 days
... all your quick responses to please HELP!
.... and working like a mad man - lost 5kgs, ate seldom and lived on ice tea and chips
Net-net - a great experience - was the car in dire need of all that ...
beside the broken bellhousing boss and 2 slipping intake hose clamps ..NO!
Does it run better now? Well, aside from those 2 necessary issues ... NO!
I'm glad I did it though - might be a bit more gentle on the track in future

Your garage experience sounds a lot like mine. Tough and sole-searching at times, but quite often very rewarding in the end.
Doesn't it feel good to get the muck off of the engine.
