I've just booked Donington for Friday 10th October. It's with RMA track days and is currently priced at £175 (price goes up as spaces get filled). RMA allow overtaking on both sides, so should be an entertaining day.

Just looked at the RMA website - looks like you're playing with the big boys on that day

While it's true that RMA days attract more exotica than others it doesn't mean they're necessarily quicker.....except maybe on the straight bits.

You coming?

Very good chance I will. Just need to check some work commitments before I can book. As you know it's the 944 I'm tending to use on track which will give the 'posh boys' something to smirk at

Just back from my first trip to Anglesey circuit where a bunch of us 964s had great fun on the track. With me were John, Kevin, Talat and David. Here's the line up of 5 happy cars at the end of the day:

Lovely sunny day with a dry grippy track. The elevation changes make it a challenge to learn. While there are one too many hairpin style corners, there's a good flow to the rest of the circuit. Here's a few laps from the afternoon sessions:

and here's a video of one lap with a guide to the circuit:

Turn 1 is approached in 3rd gear and needs a little brake before turning in. You can then use pretty much full throttle as there is loads of room. It's then a hard brake for the first hairpin. I stayed in 3rd and it all seems a bit slow but 2nd didn't get me round any faster. We're then on the fastest stretch where you can put your foot down most of the way. Half way along is Church where I did a little brake to turn in (while in 4th). The brave could just do a little lift or be flat if you're really brave. From then on it's flat in fourth until you hit the slope for a hard brake to Rocket. The braking is aided by it being so uphill. And then a shift down to 3rd for the Rocket complex. Again, it seems slow because of the hairpin but 2nd wasn't any quicker for me (unless there was a slower car in front that I wanted to get past on the exit). Accelerate out of Rocket to get to the fun Peel corner. A little brake here and stay in 3rd and let the car drift to the left and then swing to the right. At this point you can only see the brow of the track and the Sea in front of you. It's then down hill on balanced throttle and brake for a light turn in to the left of Seamans. Full throttle at the apex here helps the car turn itself with very little steering lock as there's a nice compression just after the apex. Full throttle along the straight and up to 4th. Then there's a heavy brake and shift down to 3rd for the last hairpin. Again this feels very slow. From there it's full throttle and a shift to 4th down to the bus stop. A medium brake here, a shift down to 3rd and a late turn to help straighten what appears to be a blind corner. And back to the start for another lap.

I liked it a lot. Looking back, I can see a lot of different ways to drive some of the corners so it's by no means one dimensional. I also hear that some TDOs run a shorter circuit in the morning which uses the corkscrew...that takes out one of the hairpins and adds a fun factor.

As it's one of those places that involves a longish drive for most, it also lends itself to an overnight trip....John, Kev, Talat and myself certainly enjoyed a beer or three the night before.

Its a lovely event, really friendly and in a beautiful setting, I'm hoping that we can get a few 964s to enter for next year. More pics here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/1...02453273508529

Now there's an idea!

Is it operated on a run what ya brung basis, or do you need a licence?

Nice to see Freedman's car in action and sounding terrific

It is a bit more involved than the MLR sprints, you need a license (you can get away with the postal variety - £40 I think), MSA/FIA race suit and helmet but really it's not that much hassle.
