Well... I finally started searching again for the seal repair kit for the steering rack... looks like a few folks here have been successful repairing theirs... email sent to http://steeringseals.com/911.html
Got the car back from my friend's garage tonight... feels good to have my baby back home. First to fix the steering rack and then to start looking at what is wrong with the transmission. I want this puppy back on the road as soon as possible. Really miss driving it...

Thank you. But age has taken its toll... needs a new respray, steering rack needs to be repaired (ordering the seals today), transmission will only go into 2 and 4 and that is with a fight (can't get it to go into reverse, 1, 3, 5)... the two A/C blowers in the front (hamster wheels) need replacing... and I can't figure out why the car brakes when I turn the steering wheel all the way... other than that car is great

I was able to get some work done last night...
Using these threads as reference:
http://p-car.com/diy/steering/
Steering Stop for cars with 17" Wheels
Steering Rack DYI Rebuild Tutorial
With the car on the lift, bottom tray removed:
Tie rods removed (I had to loosen the two bolt on each suspension mount/strut to get the tie rod to come out. Not enough clearance with the strut in place.
Count the amount of full turns to remove it so that you can remember the right length when installing back...
Rubber booth pulled out...
32mm to loosen the steering stop nut...
Also count the turns needed to remove it... or just measure the distance from the steering stop to the yoke... 4 to 5mm must be set between the stop and the shoulder of the yoke.
I thought that my problem with the car stopping during full wheel lock was due to having the incorrect steering stop... well... not that... I have the 10mm steering stop which is the correct one for cars with 17" wheels (I believe these stops were standard from 1992 on...) Anyway... back to the drawing board... it must be that I need an additional spacer for the front wheels to avoid them touching the inside wheel well... I have ruled out everything else. But I digress... all that is captured in this thread: Brakes Locking up (more like wheels touching wheel well...) . So I need to find out what is the correct spacing needed when you mount turbo wheels in the front... might be as simple as installing a 4-5mm spacer... more on this to come once I finish rebuilding the steering rack...
With all that removed, time to loosen the steering column from the inside... (I should have done that from the start... but since the car was already on the lift... now watch it being a pita because it helps having the resistance from the wheels on the floor... just watch...
More later tonight...

Three Wheelin'
I hope you have less issues removing the 4 bolts through the 'U' shaped clamps that hold the rack to the cross member than I did!
These we're stuck so hard and sheared What a saga...

All I need now is to loosen the steering shaft... and then remove the steering rack. After that, it is only a matter of waiting for the seal kit to get here.

Loosen the bolt on the steering shaft. I was able to do that without having to remove any floorboard or pedal board. 13mm wrench. Screwdriver to open up the clamp so that it will slide off the splines easy... go under the car, have father-in-law turn the steerin wheel to the left, drop the passenger side first, turn steering wheel the other way, drop the driver side and it is out!
Let's clean it up good... got all the cosmoline out with gasoline and a brush...
For future reference:
That is all for tonight... now to wait for the seals to arrive...

Thank you for the kind words.
Believe me, I was extremely happy to have found the seal kit... the steering rack and transmission issues are two big $$ ticket items and reason why I parked the car... I just could not spend 3K on a steering rack because I will need that (or more) to fix the transmission!!
So for around 70.00 in seals, some labor that I can manage, I will have a working steering rack... I can then turn my attention to the transmission and see what the issue is with it...
