These are snapshots I grabbed from a G50 trans. The mounts look the same, the bell housing looks the same.

As I'm thinking through this, I'm thinking that the two differences for the starter mounts would be the main hole where the starter slides through, and/or where the end is supported (on the 90+ starters).
The differences there would be I.D. of those holes, and/or the distance between the two. If that's actually the case, I'm betting it would be possible (and least expensive) to machine either/both holes to accept the updated starter.

If the difference in length between the holes is shorter than the new starter, the recess where the starter pin mounts could be machined down, and if the length is greater I could machine up a mount that slots into the bellhousing and over the starter pin to support it...

I already have the 90+ clutch/flywheel/pressure plate and would really prefer NOT to have single year parts on the car as they can be harder to come by. If I had spare cash to throw at the car I'd just get a G50 and be rockin' and rollin', but it seems like machining the current bellhousing might be the most feasible option right now.

Thoughts?

Are you going to sell the G64 transmission when you change to 2WD? If so I would not modify it. If it were me I would bolt it up with the - mind you desirable - single year setup and then sell the whole mess, unmodified, if/when you change over.

naturally your call.

Most likely, but if I sell it modified for the newer starter it would be applicable to the 90-94 cars, so theoretically would have a wider appeal, no?

If you are an ace machinist with a track record and reputation and this is a proven good mod... maybe. Otherwise anything modified especially something so un-reversible as a bellhousing: absolutely not. Is one guy's opinion. Not trying to be a jerk here just sounding board. Also if the clutch parts you purchased are new you can sell them. All the one year parts are as available as the non one year, to my knowledge.

Fair enough, and you'd have to try REALLY hard for me to think you're being a jerk. One of the reasons I started the thread and am asking some of these off the wall questions is to help add to the knowledge bank of the forum that's helped me out a ton over the years.

The clutch parts are new, and if I need to go back to '89 specific I'll just hold on to them because I'd be doing some kind of swap within the next 12 months.
I'm lucky that I am friends with a number of machinists that could tackle the job (theoretically). If it's just a matter of machining out the housing a few mm/thousandths that should be something a competent machinist should be able to accomplish relatively easy.

Thanks Anthony, I ordered up a new bracket yesterday since it's very apparent comparing your pictures to the back of my engine that your bracket sits flush with the back of the case whereas mine angles out.
Also, re: starter, I ordered the updated starter from EBS, which should be here by the weekend. I'm going to take a look at the bellhousings to see what specifically the issues are comparing the "new" vs "old" parts. Everyone says they're different, but I haven't been able to find out how. Hoping I can accomplish that later this week.

As always, this forum is a wealth of information with a ton of great people. If any of you find yourselves in Houston drinks are on me.

Bit of an update for everyone. I decided to do a G50 swap on the car and am going through the process of collecting all the parts now.
One part that I haven't ordered yet is part #10 below.

I know there is the rubber bushing in the middle, as well as the two that sandwich the subframe. I've seen poly bushings online to replace the main rubber one.
My question is (mainly because the parts are silly expensive for what they are), is it detrimental if I just machined something out of aluminum? I.E. a solid mount.

The vibrations and noise I would think would be a bit much. I have gone the cheap route. I used a product called betaseal. It is a window adhesive with similar consistency to the rubber in the mounts and when layered up properly allowing it to dry it makes for a much stiffer bushing and in some cases I have found it helped ailing worn bushings come back to life. https://www.dupont.com/products/betaseal.html

Thanks, Anthony, I'll have to check it out. My cheap side just has a hard time paying >$200 for a bushing with a bolt stuck on the end of it. I understand the Porsche tax, and am fine paying it, generally...but that seems right out of order.

Some progress, but not enough. Engine is in, cranked...BOOM! SOB we installed the distributors 180* out. Now it’s wanting to start, but not quite there. Any help/thoughts?

On the upside, it sure does look good!
