I know exactly how you feel when you forget to install a part and have to undo everything. sigh
Great vid. Thanks again.
I'm dying to see the episode when you drive this car man.
And the final weight loss total.

Awesome video. Can you upgrade to the 993 cam tower and valve covers on an otherwise stock 964 engine or are other supporting mods required?

Who's rockers are you using? The 964 splash oiling system works fine so long as the squirters are clear and working. They shoot oil towards the oiling holes you point out and have worked for every 911 engine up till the 993. I converted my 993 rockers from hydraulic to mechanical for my track car. Since I started with a 993 engine it was rather cheap to do. The 993 rockers are forged vs the earlier cast iron ones and there is roughly one pound of weight saved there alone. This is more critical if you plan to increase the revs of the engine.

Yes you can, but it’s a quite costly operation. I would not have done it unless I was changing rockers anyway.

I’ve installed the forged ones from Pauter. I actually had some issues with my previous 964 cam housings that together with a rocker upgrade made it an easy choise to go for a 993 upgrade.

Default Engine almost complete!

It took a bit of time this time. Long story short…I made some blunders and I ended up loosing a lot of time.

With that said I know have an almost finished engine!

As someone who still needs to purchase rockers for the build - Aside from the 993 cam towers themselves, what else do I need to buy or modify to make this work?

Thanks!

nothing really. Please make sure though that you have a camshaft with the oil groove for distributing the oil from the top to the bottom of the cam house. It’s a large groove in the first bearing.

I have so many questions . In a stock 993 with hydraulic style rockers, I know the oil flows into the tappet to pressurize them - it where does it go from there? The reason I ask is because I don’t see an exit path for the oil with the 964 style rockers…and that seems like it might not keep fresh oil on the rocker shafts. I’m. Ot sure how much would escape between the shaft and rocker bushing. Also - without the hydraulic tappet, does there need to be a restrictor added?

Camshaft indeed. The way the oil comes
from the top of the cam tower to the bottom
is by injecting it into a groove in one of the camshaft journals. Then the opposing holes of the camtower will receive the oil and distribute to
the rocker shafts.

Not all camshafts have this.

Interesting,

There are a dozen threads on converting these but nobody has mentioned this before. I would think the splash oil should feed this and the earlier mechanical cam towers I don't believe had this feature. Now you have me thinking. I am nearly done with my build but I don't have any pics of the camshafts and it has been over a year since I closed things up. Looks like I need to investigate this further.

It looks like I can pull the Bridge from the cam tower to the timing chain housing to the far left bottom and I should see if I have this groove with a borescope. Although as I recall the tube along the top of the cam tower (which used to squirt oil on the mechanical rockers in a 964) is what feeds the rockers? My engine is a 96 993 going in my 964 RSR tribute but will be twin turbocharged.

Hi Jonte, I need to buy the camshafts soon. What is the part number for yours to make sure I get the camshaft with the right design for the oil distribution to the rockers?
