In that case yes, but I would definitely not run narrow 19mm belt with two cams.

Was it hard to swap the gears between tensioner bearings or a straight press-out/press-in deal?

By that, you mean dual cam gears? I will be using the factory set up with the chain and a single sprocket on the exhaust cam. So all the 8v stuff will work? I guess I never realized the 8v and 16v belts were the same length.

No, I mean single cam gear but two cams like factory 16v setup as opposed to single cam in 8v head.

Two cams mean two times more friction and therefore more load on the belt. That is the reason factory went with wider belt on 16v 944 S. I am not sure late 8v has the same wide 25.4 (1") belt like all 16v cars have, earlier 8v were 19mm.

Swapping the sprockets on the tensioner was simple press in/press out thing, nothing else.

Ok, I understand now. With the eccentric roller, you dont have the extra roller that the spring tensioners have, and since I'm already running the updated 46mm idler pulley with the red bearing, all I have to do is get a 16v toothed tension roller and swap the roller to my old bearing. Simple enough, thanks a bunch for the clarification, I was over thinking this.

No, the 8V belt (944-1/944-2/944 turbo) is the same "thinner" model for all model years, and in the same logic the 16V belt (S/S2/968) is the same "thicker" model for all model years.

Take S or S2 tensioner and remove the toothed gear from the bearing and install it onto early tensioner bearing (remove old one first). This is because there is no wider tensioner that would fit to early block.
2. You need 1 tooth longer timing belt than stock S2/S/968 119teeth belt as the tensioner position is slightly different. 120x25.4mm belt is correct, from VW 2.4 diesel engine, same as found on Volvo 940/960's.
Just to be clear, this is for for the early eccentric tensioner. For late 87+ block, you could just swap the wider S/S2/968 tensioner roller onto the 951 spring tensioner?

I love the project, thank you for the updates!

Today started the engine, all seemed fine except small oil leak from somewhere in front of the engine. At least oil pressure is there to create leaks

Now next thing is to take the car to a friend who will make crossover pipe and exhaust.

After that, hopefully some faster drives

Here's a photo of the intercooler. Other end tank is finished but needs to be welded on, will do that when I have figured out the cooling rad placement (it is bigger than stock).
